Ha! That was great. Reading that almost made me feel Douglas Adams had risen from the grave to write it (minus the language, of course).

The more I think about this thing, the more it bugs me.

But, to be honest, I actually don't think this thing will work.

They need to smash two protons together... I don't think so. I don't have a degree in physics or anything, but is it even likely this will succeed? I hope the particles miss each other and break the machine.

hehe gave me a good chuckle too...

I finally understand Quantum physics:
"We're talking particles popping in and out of existence, being in two places at the same time, and generally acting like A$$&%les."

lol

Lol what?

You think this is the first time in the universe that two protons will have smashed together? Or even on our planet? Or even intentionally by scientists? This month?

Actually, the huge magnets inside the machine make it possible to direct the flow of protons in more or less a confined beam that's only a few protons width wide. When colliding a million or so protons, it's virtually impossible that they would miss.

The chance that something devastating would occur is the same chance that you would have of winning the lottery every week for 3 months or something ridiculous like that.

I saw a Star Trek where two protons in torpedo form collided, no big whoop.

Things like this have been done since 1932. Hell the idea of smashing atoms together goes back to the Rutherford golf foil experiment in 1909. The LHC is just doing it at speeds and energies higher than ever attained before.

This is based on the the never-before-observed data of this not-yet-happened experiment I trust.

The whole point of this is to see what's going to happen, to give it even vague mathematical odds to an event we can't predict is asinine.
Edit: not meant as an attack on you, I'm sure you are just repeating the scientific community's comments.

Man o' man do I love cracked.com ... and that is one of the best articles I've read on it. I recommend everybody read the whole thing.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Well, first imagine an apocalyptic nuclear holocaust. Multiply that by about one hundred and twenty thousand billion, and then multiply that by around the neighborhood of infinity. That equals around one eighth of the magnitude of the Big Bang. Nevertheless, scientists are pretty sure they can contain their Big Bang in an erlenmeyer flask, just so long as they remember to cork it.

So, Basically It's Like...
Imagine you have a huge tanker truck parked outside a children's hospital. You don't know what's inside it, but you're fairly confident that it's either a cure for cancer, or 20,000 gallons of explosive nitroglycerin. To find out which, you have to shoot at it with an AK-47.

If it happens, what're you going to do about it?

So you might as well sit back, relax, crack a beer and enjoy front row seats to the end of existance.

I know I will.

Maybe it`s just me, but I would imagine anybody with a science background would find those bits of the article offensive.

Again, maybe it's just me, but I'll take the scientific community's opinion over yours any day.

I guess what I mean is that the whole mini- big-bang black hole possibility bugs me. But I haven't done enough reading on it to know if that is a serious possibility or not.

They have many particle accelerators that have done the same job as the LHC will do in September. The only difference between those ones and the LHC is that the LHC is friggen huge in terms of scale in comparison. Theoretically speaking, they will be better able to get the protons firing at 99.9% of the speed of light in both directions, which IIRC the one in New York (state, not City) could not do. Considering the damage that the one in New York did (none), they are extrapolating that the energy required to actually do damage would be many many thousands of times the amount of energy produced at the LHC, which is why they do not believe that anything of dire consequence will happen.

Personally I am concerned like everyone else about what is going on with the LHC. However, as a layman I do not know all the details, but the scientists involved in the project say that there is a very minuscule chance at something catastrophic occurring when it they fire it up, it helps to differ my worries as I tend to trust expert opinions on subjects that I am not an expert in.

Hopefully September 10th isn't a negative news day
