Default Crane falls on C-Train in Dalhousie

No link anywhere yet, but my department is getting a ton of media calls about it. No word on any injuries, extent of damage, or anything like that, though.

I hope everyone is OK that was around it.

EDIT: Apparently seven people injured (including the driver), non-life-threatening injuries. This is just through the grapevine.

Glad to hear there were no deaths. I went by it earlier and it looked like it could have been bad. Damage to the front of the train and the windshield was gone. Must have just happened when I was there. They were in the process of shutting down crowchild, and they had all the people still on the train.

Yikes......I am a daily LRT user. Good to hear that no one was seriously hurt and it's an isolated incident.

This is how we know that we're not using big enough cranes.

Wow, way to go Enmax, swinging a crane into the line before you have clearance to shut it down... Someone's gonna lose their job, methinks.

Lucky this didn't happen at rush hour, and lucky it didn't happen in the middle of the line somewhere, but at the end.

I heard on QR that it'll be about two days before they have that south track fixed. Bad news for NW transit commuters. Probably also going to affect SB Crowchild, though you northies are already used to the perpetual construction on that strip.

I blame Bertuzzi for this.

I just drove by there and saw the train, I was trying to figure out what happened with all the damage towards the top.

Only southbound traffic on Crowchild was jammed.

This is a better description of the event from CFD:

A collision occurred on the eastbound/southbound LRT track
between the Brentwood and Dalhousie Stations at 10:14 this
morning. An eastbound C-Train came in contact with the crane
section of a boom truck, resulting in a train derailment and
serious damage to the front of the C-Train.

The Calgary Fire Department, along with EMS, CPS, Enmax, and
Calgary Transit were dispatched to the incident. Seven Fire
apparatus and 20 fire personnel responded to the scene.

The Incident Commander ensured that the area was de-energized
and at that point firefighters were able to assist in
removing passengers from the train. According to EMS, 36
patients were assessed and 6 of those were transported,
including the C-Train operator. None of those transported
were reported to have suffered serious injury.

The Calgary Fire Department's Hazardous Materials specialists
were called to the scene to confirm that there was no
negative environment impact as a result of the collision.

It appears that the boom truck involved in the collision was
parked in the eastbound curb lane of Crowchild Trail along
the LRT tracks. They were tasked with pulling cable and had
requested a "signal lock out" for 10:30. They were awaiting
this LRT lane closure at the time of the incident.

All lanes of eastbound Crowchild Trail have been closed
pending the investigation by CPS and Calgary Transit.
Initially, one land of westbound Crowchild was also closed,
but access to all westbound lanes has since been restored.

Due to the derailment and significant damage to both the
train and components of the track, it is estimated that C
-Train service will be affected for up to two days. Further
information regarding C-Train service on the NW leg will be
communicated by Calgary Transit.

nm, wrong crane imagined

Is the drivers station on the left or right side of the train? I always thought it was near the middle or left side, but the article implies it's on the right.

Coworker just got this from Calgary Transit:

Thank you for your inquiry. I think that the notice for the website is just being completed and should be up shortly. I can tell you though that at this time the train is running on a single track so the trains must wait for each other in order to bypass the unusable portion of track. They are going to repair the track as quickly as possible but it is probable that the single tracking will still be in effect this afternoon during rush hour.

Hmmm ... as a new daily c-train user I might have to use this as an excuse to work from home for the next couple days. Already had a ride home for tonight arranged for alternate reasons, pretty pleased about that.

I would, sounds like it may take a few days to fix the tracks.

So now, does anyone know what happens to people who travel to the NW during rush hour?

It would appear that you can ride the train but you will get home quite late.
