I'm leaving for New York to attend a conference on Monday morning, and looking at my sched, I seem to have a wack of spare time to get into trouble.
I'm staying at the University Club on 55th and 5th, anyone have any suggestions on things to do in New York?
It would be appreciated.

You'll have to go see ground zero for sure.
I'd be going to check out local clubs. I always hear about big name bands playing gigs in little bars in New York.

Some ideas:
- If you're a baseball fan try to catch a Yankee game. Even if you are not a Yankees fan the atmosphere is incredible. Not sure if the Yankes are home right now or not
- Empire State Building (preferably at night)
- Wander around Times square and people watch
- Catch an off broadway show (better than broadway)
- You can spend a full day at either the Gugenheim or MET if you like museums
- Take a jog through Central Park
New York is an incredible city. You'll have a blast no matter what you do.

Ground zero is pretty boring actually.... just a huge hole. The only thing that is really important to realize is just how big the site was but other then that.... Worth a look if you have days and days to spend i guess....
The Gugenheim has been undergoing ongoing renovations and many parts have been closed off. In the fall i did the entire thing in under an hour and not for lack of appreciation or trying... the spiral was ocmpletely closed and only 4/5(5/6?) of the back areas were open. Might be open now though... ?
The modern art at the Metropolitan is incrediable, Central Park is cool, MOMA gallery is very cool, shopping in SOHO (and everywhere else really...), and FAO schwarz toy store is pretty awesome.... Time Square is great for late night and i loved the food in Little Italy... SSSSoooo much to do! Just wondering around in incrediable!

I guess so, if you're not into history.
I suppose to a lot of people, the beaches of Normandy are just a shoreline, or a piece of the Berlin Wall is just a chuck of cement with no value.
If you're into history, ground zero is more than just a hole - or at least it would be to me.

Try and get to a Letterman taping. There is a # you can call the morning of to try and snag tickets that people haven't claimed. All they do is ask you something about the show the night before. If you can answer it you are in. BTW it really is cold in there.

There's a lot to do. Unless my internal map is wrong, it seems that you're staying in Midtown/East Side, so Central Park will be close and also the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, and the UN.
The Met and the Gugenheim are in your general vicinity if you stray a little further. I too ran into the same problem as Claeren in the fall at the Gugenhein, but I am told the whole thing is open now.

wear your BEST leather coat, LOTS of bling bling, show a FAT wallet and go for a stroll through Harlem...see how fast you can make it through!
You wont have any problem finding things to do...just ask a Cab driver to take you to any hot spot. Have fun...its a great town!
Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York.

you know, what depending on how much time you have, id say, screw it and just walk around. the best part of this city's is its variety and energy thats on the street, and you can get a greater grasp of this city by walking around than wasting time in line at some tourist hellhole.
theres great places to see in all parts of manhattan, so you wont get bored, and along they way you can have some amazing food options.

I thought the Empire State building was cool. Depending on what time of day you go the lines can be alright.
Ground Zero wasn't really that interesting for me personally but for some of the people that I was there with were really moved. I gues it depends on the individual as to how interesting it is.

If you go first thing in the morning the UN security line-up is not that bad and you should be able to get through the entire tour well within 2 hours, maybe within 1 hr.
The UN was cool, but the coolest thing i thought was how 1970's it all was... it is so compromised as an institution, in so many ways and for so long, and walking around the grounds really shows it...
I love how when you go to the weapons museum section they talk about how the UN got SO close to banning land mines and but one or two countries held out, but they don't say which! These American women on my tour are like, "What kind of country wouldn't ban landmines, they are so horrible... " Gawd.... lol...
