Default The Beer Thread

Just an off-shoot from my other thread about shipping beer to the US.

So what does everyone like? The more mainstream Canadian/American beers are a bit 'meh' to me. While I will drink them, I prefer something 'different.'

Ales are more my preference.

Guinness is pretty good, also had NewCastle Brown Ale the other day, which was alright as well. I will try some 'Honey Brown' from Big Rock Brewery tonight, so my opinion on that is yet to come.

I love to try out new stuff, especially imported beer.

Beer snob here.

I will drink anything if it is free, but if I'm paying for my beer I like less mainstream stuff.

Probably my most mainstream indulgence is Dos Equis special lager with a big ol' lime wedge. Nostalgic for me I guess. Reminds me of some really fun times in Tijuana. I once bought 30 shots of tequila and 30 of these beers for $30 at some bar there. Love it!

Anything that New Belgium brews is great. I love Fat Tire Amber Ale. Right now I'm enjoying some Skinny Dip Ale from New Belgium. Great company, great beer.

Big Rock makes great beer. Used to love grabbing some Grasshopper and/or Warthog Ale when I lived in Kalispell. I don't know if they brew those varieties anymore or not, but they were yummy.

Also love Blue Moon.

Beer varies so much person to person. I know people who actually think Bud is a good beer but here are a few of my favorites:

Innis and Gunn - only avail in singles at $4 or so per bottle. Oak aged in scotch casks. This is the greatest beer on the planet. But it's not to get drunk off of.

Maudite or La fin du monde or trois pistole : all three are triple fermented meaning they have higher alcohol content (about 8% IIRC). They are made by Sleeman (a sister company called Unibroue) and they are all delicious.

Dab - this one goes by another name too but it says dab on the bottles i think. German, really tasty, better than the heinikens and stellas out there for Euro beers.

Fruili - again only avail in singles and it is kind of a girly beer. Tastes like raspberrys or strawberries i can't remember which. Very tasty for a desert beer.

Big Rock Espresso: This beer is phenomenal especially after a meal with some chocolate. tastes like it sounds, almost tastes like guiness but carbonated more with a less frothy head.

Grolsch : another delicious Euro beer.

Rickards White. Great at the bar with lots of orange.

check out this site for some snobby but extensive opinions. The guy is from Calgary too.

Grolsch is good. Don't drink it if you're drunk you'll kill yourself trying to get the next bottle open.

Have never tried any of the others flip.....but I will!

If you're ever in England, order up a Guinness Extra Cold. Best beer ever.

Something about a super cooler... but its cold and it's awesome.

Yeah I forgot Moosehead. I really like Steamwhistle too. Best Pilsner around.

On a similar note I loved being out east for 4 days recently, I was in Hamilton for a Wedding, because they have stuff like moosehead and steamwhistle readily available at a lot of pubs. here in calgary not so much.

EDIT: check out Bottle Screw Bills on 10ave and 1st IIRC. They have 80 or so beers for you to try. It'll cost you a lot, but still cheaper than buying 50 6 packs of bottles. Plus if you try them all in one year they put your name on a plaque and display it. Just don't go during Stampede they cut their selection down to nothing.

I have my beers that I like: Pilsner is my official "cheap beer of choice", also really like Stella, Kilkenney, Tetley, and Beck's.

And if you can find it Heineken Dark is fantastic - haven't seen it in Canada in years - last time I enjoyed one was down in Montana.

But I also really like trying new beers so when the opportunity is there I will pass up a beer I know I love for one that I haven't tried. That can be a bad thing because there are some out there that are truly bad - including one served up at the Hop n' Brew that tastes like old socks - and yet somehow I always forget the name of it and end up ordering it.

Another vote for Innis and Gunn - that stuff is incredible. I have never drank more than 1 bottle at a time, but it is certainly the stuff of heaven.

Samuel Smith brews good beer as well - Oatmeal Stout is a favourite.

For a good Ontario beer, try Creemore Springs. I can't find bottles of it out here, but you can get it on tap at Flames Central and Chillis.

When I was in Portland Oregon I made a visit to the Rogue Brewery pub. Some of the Rogue beers are pretty tasty, and they have such a variety that any beer drinker could find something good.

I drink Keith's like its going out of style.

But, in my trip to Belgium here are a few that I loved:

Leffe - Many different types, I prefer the Blonde, but Trippel is also good.

Affligem - Same deal.

Duvel - Dont buy the Canadian imported equivalent, its crap.

Westmalle - very potent, especially the Trippel.

Brugge trippel - very smooth but strong.

An Austrian beer called Gosser is also very, very good.

I tend to prefer ales and pale ales.

On a hot day I love Corona with Lime and MGD.

That crap is terrible. The microbrewery theory is junk. Cutthroat? As advertised it tastes like swallowing razor blades. Awful, awful stuff.

No love for Wild Rose here? Their beers are pretty good... I've even converted some ladies who never drank beer by using the raspberry beer they make. Good stuff.

Well since I have never personally done that taste test comparison, I will defer to your knowledge on the subject.

But I have a couple questions. First, was the piss you drank your own or someone elses? Secondly, was it warm (i.e. fresh) or did you cool it down first? Conversely, perhaps you warmed up the beer to piss temperatures in order to do your comparison.

Lastly, of the two, which did you prefer most?

Hmm...well Europe kinda spoiled me for a bit as the beer over there is just incredible in comparison to what we get over here.

Locke, I'll agree with you on the Gosser for sure. Also, Pilsner Urquell, and every other beer I tried over there. On tap they are truly amazing.

For beer here...I'm an avid Keith's drinker. But not the red. Good god don't get Keiths Red Amber Ale. It's not good. Rickard's Red is pretty damn good though. Same with Sleeman's Honey Brown. Lately a lot of Corona with a lime wedge has been consumed. For cheap beer...gotta rock the Vitamin P! Best cheap stuff on the market.

Dos Equis is pretty much all I drink when the weather turns nice, for hockey season I love Lowenbrau and Warsteiner. Never tried Unibroue, is it available at Willow Park?
