CP Book Club III Meeting - Monday August 25 @ 7:00 PM Brewster's 11 Ave/8th St
Time for another book club meeting, but this time I'm going to organize a little differently; as we had a very close vote last time in which all the books were but 1 vote behind the eventual winner, I have by dictatorial fiat chosen the book for the next meeting (Aug 25/7:00 PM/Brewster's 11 Ave/8 St SW), which is:
The Road: Cormac McCarthy
From the wikipedia article: "The Road is a 2006 novel by American writer Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic tale describing a journey taken by a father and his young son over a period of several months across a landscape blasted years before by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and, seemingly, most life on earth. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2006 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction, and was chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection."
As the venue was reasonably comfortable in Book Club II, and is a central location, I see no reason to change it, and I would prefer to use the same place every time so eventually they'll give us free stuff (always an important consideration!). However, as always, I am open to feedback and suggestions.
Please indicate in this thread if you are thinking about attending, so I can get an idea of how many people will be there (done by a formula of dividing the potential by two and subtracting Redvan ).

No need to string you along this time Jammies; I will be unable to attend for sure. Holidays. I will likely pick it up and read it all the same.

Just type out a rant about the book and have someone read it as if it was you! That way no one can disagree with you either!

Ok this time I will come finally. For two reasons. 1) I might have time to finally read the book, and 2) I voted twice for this book last time and have been looking forward to reading it.

Well I read it in under 3 hours, so all you need is a summer evening when it's raining or plenty of fiber in the diet to get 'er done.

I will be there in spirit. BTW, who the heck is Gordon Montador? All I can seem to find out is that he is/was a journalist who hung out in gay bars. Of course he has that non-fiction award named after him. Also do you know anything about the Humber School for Writers? I have been on their mailing list forever, but have been disappointed in most writers' retreats and seminars. Just wondering.

What point are you at in your writing career? Are you looking at doing a novel-length manuscript? Are you looking at their summer workshop or the 30 week program? I've heard generally positive things about the 30 week program, and fairly mixed things about the summer workshop. The 30 week program is definitely more gruelling than most writing classes, and you can probably expect to have your stuff ripped to shreds a few times. It seems like a pretty good hybrid between the immediacy of a workshop and the intensiveness of a university program.
I find that I'm generally annoyed with workshops because their full of people who are more interested in being writers than in actually writing. I've heard this is less of a problem with their 30 week program, but still occurs in their workshops.

I share your workshop annoyance . I'll get back to you with my Prague story! Have fun at your meeting --I'll be thinking of all of you as I read my "Adult Underachievement" self-help book!! Cheers to all!!!!
