As someone who just recently bought his first ever Mac a couple weeks back (I went with the iMac, too), allow me to share what I've done so far...

1. http://www.londondrugs.com/Cultures/...7&ProductTab=3
$199 for a 500GB backup drive that uses Firewire800. It's made by Iomega, and it comes out of the box ready to use with Time Machine, too. If you don't already have a wireless router, you can look at the Time Capsule from Apple (wireless router with built in hard drive), though everything I've read says to stay away from them. They are (apparently) bad for bogging down your network with their hourly backups. I use the Imoega one I linked to, and it works awesomely. Well, technically, Time Machine works awesomely, but it's tough to beat a 500GB external with Firewire800 support for $199. Apple sells them on their site, too.

2. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21430
SimplyRar. Think WinRar for Mac.

3. http://www.transmissionbt.com
Transmission. Thin uTorrent for Mac. (though I wish there was a uTorrent release for Mac)

4. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/product...8/default.mspx
http://www.neooffice.org
http://www.openoffice.org
Office Suites for Mac. Two are free, one is not. Out of the free ones, I prefer Neo Office. Having said that, I'm actually using the M$ offering.

5. http://www.videolan.org
VLC is an all-in-one player you may have already used with Windows. It's even better on a Mac.

Edit:

Also, about the mouse/keyboard...

The Apple Wireless keyboard sucks. It's a laptop keyboard. This means no keypad and very very small. Get the wired one, it's small too, but it has a full set of keys (both a backspace and a delete key, for instance). It also has 2 usb ports - which are almost mandatory, since the iMac istelf only has 3 in total.

The Apple mouse (wired or wireless) sucks. If you're a Windows (or even Linux) user, then you like to right click. The problem with the Apple mouse is that, even though you can set it up so it recognizes right clicks, you have to lift your left finger completely off the mouse, or it will think it's a left click. Sounds weird, but try it and you'll see what I mean.

I ordered both the wireless keyboard and mouse from Apple with my iMac. I then had to buy the wired keyboard and a wireless logitech mouse from Future Shop afterwards.

Other than all that... I hope you got the 24" one and I also hope you didn't upgrade the RAM from Apple. You can get the same RAM from Crucial or Mushkin, etc... and save yourself about $100.

PS: I absolutely LOVE my Mac.

I would recommend taking a quick swing through this thread of mine from a little while ago ... I found it quite useful.

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=60229

From that thread I managed to find some real gems such as:
vlc - as mentioned, the best media player I've ever used
transmission - great for torrents
iwork - There are free alternatives. If they don't turn your crank, I'd recommend trying out the free trial of iwork from the apple site. It's like microsoft office only it doesn't annoy me (and it's compatible with all office file types)
Aimersoft Mac Video Converter - Yes I know there are free video converters out there, but this one ($35) works really really well for me. Very clean interface and loads of conversion features
Handbrake - rips your dvd's for you. I've recently begun taking the ctrain to work in the mornings. Having a healthy dose of movies on my iphone has been key.

It was strongly recommended that I learn to use Spaces and Automator to organize and ease my workflow. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but from what I've heard they're awesome.

This may not be your thing, but there is a handy little app for the mac called Quicksilver. At the core it's a launcher. I can launch applications by keying it up and just typing (ex. I bring it up, type "phot" and it already knows i'm looking for photoshop ... hit enter and it launches). It also catalogs whatever you'd like for very easy reference. The first few times I used it I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. The more I use it the more impressed I get. It can get pretty deep and useful once you learn to harness it. Some cool little basic things it can do:
- Use it to access your dictionary or thesaurus
- rename, copy, move or delete files without ever opening a finder window
- change the extension of an image file or change the dimensions. For example if you have a large .png file you can change it to a jpeg and fit it to a smaller size all with a couple keystrokes
- Use mouse gestures to do almost anything you'd like (I have it set up so that whatever file i have selected will open in photoshop if I hold down the option key and make a "p" with my mouse ... saves me having to right-click and then navigating through the menu items)
- catalog the menu items of an application (instead of changing the units and increments in indesign by going to file --> preferences --> general --> units and increments, I can just make a mouse gesture and then type "units" and the option becomes available).

Basically if you can practice up with it and tweak it to your liking, you can use it to make your everyday tasks even faster. It's odd ... some things are so simple, yet by eliminating even one click you feel much more efficient. Like I said before, might not be your thing. It took me months to actually figure out that it had its advantages. Give it a try one day if you're curious.

Boo... that's what ruined so many good P2P apps. Turning them into Java so they'd run on Macs, making them bloated slow and inefficient, instead of lightweight and quick.

I'm thinking of Azureus, Limewire... never used Transmission, but I bet it would slow down if they tried to make it compatible with Windows. The ones that aren't portable are better because they have less overhead when the run.

How did the mods allow you to pick the username cSpooge?

Actually it is incredibly easy to learn how to use a Mac but there is a catch. I had problems before in my limited experience to Macs. However, when I got one for my work PC I had no problems. The difference? I was open to the idea of using a Mac whereas I previously didn't care for Macs (without any good reason) and I didn't want to give them a chance.

So are you guys against using Azureus and Limewire then? I run them both (Azureus for big stuff and Limewire for single files) but is there something that's better than them? I've always used these two and haven't had problems but if there's something that works better/faster that'd be good.

Azureus is just too big. It tries to do way too much, and it's gotten annoyingly big.

Limewire is just pure evil.

I don't mind Transmission, but I've started just booting into a small XP image off to the side, and running uTorrent from within that.

I use limewire on my mac and have no problems with it. I use it for single songs, and use torrents for albums. Works for me.
