Default Yet another murder . . .

http://calsun.canoe.ca/2008/08/20/6513921.html

One man was found dead shortly after, lying in the front lawn of a northeast Calgary home. Calgary Police Service district, homicide and Tac Team members are now at the scene.
I'm one who's usually arguing that Calgary is as safe as ever, and agree that a good majority of these murders have 'victims' that are heavily involved with the drug trade and/or gangs, but the frequency of these murders is getting pretty crazy. On the news instead of reporting individual murders it would save time to just flash a graphic (like the winning lottery numbers) with the days murder victims and move on to other stories.

I'm suprised its getting this bad.. It truly is only a matter of time before we end up with a innocent bystander being struck and killed. Just like in toronto when that 14 year old girl died on boxing day.

Well, in all fairness, the NE has to keep the numbers up. They've got a quota to make.

What is the frequency? I am not really surprised by this tbqh. Calgary is becoming a bigger city and the problems that bigger cities have are starting to show up here. I still think Calgary is very safe place to live, I just wont be making any late night trips to Temple or Forest Lawn...

I don't know how does Calgary compare for murders per capita to the other big Canadian cities?

looking at the May 2008 CPS stats, crime in Calgary is down this year, and has been trending down the last couple years, including homicides, sexual assault, robbery, assault, B&E, theft etc

This is an excerpt from an article from July of this year.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/...rime-2008.html

Quote:
At 3.1 homicides per 100,000 people, Calgary is behind only Saskatoon Winnipeg, tied at 3.6 each, and our northern neighbour Edmonton at 3.3.
But I believe these are based on 2007 totals. If this year ends up being worse, we could be in the lead, but I'm having trouble finding current running totals.

Looking at the link Canada 02 gave... it's either looking good or grim. I'm not sure if the totals they show for 2006 and 2007 are for the total at the same month. If they are for the entire year, then I'm sure we have passed previous years in homicides since this report was in May and there have been a few more at least.

Wow is it bad that I'm so apathetic about this all if it is just another gang banger or drug dealer. Keep killing each other, just no innocents!!!

All rates above represent the number of incidents per 100,000 residents

National Avg 1.8
Winnipeg 3.6
Edmonton 3.3
Vancouver 2.4
Calgary 3.1
Toronto 2.0

This is what I could find.

I couldn't find a more current one for the US but here it is from 2004.

I'm thinking making fun of Edmonton and calling it "Stabmonton" is starting to look a little like the pot calling the kettle black with the recent murder rates here. I guess the only difference is that our criminals can afford guns and don't have to resort to all the inconviences of stabbing their victims.

And ours aren't random. And don't stab during celebrations.

Those stats don't surprise me, I know Vancouver definitely has a different feel to the city.

I had lived in Calgary for close to 4 years but moved back east last August. I still try to keep up on the news out there and to be quite honest in that year since I've left it does seem like things have gotten worse and there have been a lot more daylight murders. It seems like every other day now that someone is almost killed in a drive by shooting or is gunned down.

Your comparing Temple with Forest Lawn, yikes the NE is just getting a worse and worse reputation. Forest Lawn is SE for the record.

Meh, I had a good buddy that lived in Temple for years and I met quite a few, how can I say this... Interesting, people in my time there.

This particular murder occurred in Saddleridge, which is a very nice neighborhood. These kind of things can happen anywhere not just the NE.

Every other day? Do you write the dramatic headlines for Global News? 24 murders x2= 48 days = Feb 17th. Thankfully, its nearing the end of August.

As was mentioned earlier in the thread, majorish crime is down from last year.
