St. Regis Hotel closing down... the Cecil to follow?
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...2-7a170cfaa65f
Quote:
The 95-year-old St. Regis Hotel will pour its last beer on Aug. 31, before its stacking chairs and video lottery terminals are replaced with office desks and developers' computer screens for The Bow tower's project office.
And with the city in negotiations to buy the similarly historic but seedier Cecil, it's last call for an era.

What will be left to joke about if the Cecil shuts down too?!

Forest Lawn, it's probably the only bar in the city where guys go to the bathroom in groups. More of a safety issue than a gossip one.

Does Cecil Hotel charge rooms by the hour, or is that just a rumor?

Is the Regis where it says "probably the best damn tavern in the world" - Paulie 2002 or something like that?
I love that quote. What's Paulie gonna do now?

Closing the Cecil would be a great idea. Just think of how much the city would save on OT for paramedics alone!
Either that, or the ambulance out front is a permanent fixture...

Personally, while I have no love of the Cecil, I think it is kind of a necessary evil.
It's close to the drop in center. It's a location that police and paramedics know, and makes it easy to keep tabs on people.
If the Cecil closed, those people would scatter.

When I first came to Calgary, before the C-train tracks on 7th Ave., that block was the busiest in the City at night. There was only one club in Calgary so everyone went to the hotel bars. That block also had the Calgarian, the Legion and the York and maybe another one I can't remember. It was a little rough but nothing like the Cecil is today. It was one stop shopping for hookers and blow plus booze with a line up of cabs. A real boom time for Calgary in the 70s.

The one time I went to the Cecil was to watch my friend's band play (and to provide security in case the clientele didn't like him and we had to fight our way out), and my buddy got propositioned by this hideous huge alky chick who kept telling him "Me and my old man, we got an arrangement... it's ok if you wanna come back to my place, he won't mind."
So from then on one of my favorite ways to rile him up has been to imitate her and imply that the only thing holding him back was the presence of witnesses. He still shudders, years and years later, if you bring it up...

Edmonton.
Seriously though, clean up one area, and the people who made it sketchy will just migrate to another area. Hard to do anything about it.
