Calgary's came before Edmonton. I think it was the first in Canada outside Toronto.

So shouldn't the headline have been "Calgary beats Edmonton, again"?

Because of this thread I stopped in the morning to have a doughnut. I haven't had a Krispy Kreme doughnut for about a year even though I walk past a location at least twice a day. It was okay. Because there was only one in Calgary it is kind of newsworthy; when you have them all over the place no one even notices them anymore.

They had 1 store in Calgary. Sure sounds like they were cannibalizing their own business

Its a case of saturation of a market that was small and has been shrinking for the past few years. People just don't want fatty, carb loaded snacks that much anymore.
The doughnut market here in Canada isn't that big, and what market there is, is covered by Timmies and the grocery stores. You don't see timmies relying solely on doughnuts anymore do you?

As for all the Krispy Kremes in Sydney, they arn't quite the same as what the store are like here. In Australia they are more like Tim hortons doughnuts in production and distribution methods IIRC. In North America they have these elaborate machine setups, and the doghnuts are all made in store.
Also, the doughnuts here in Australia cost over double what you'd pay in Canada.

edit: I also believe fresh, hot KK doughnuts are amazing

Well the place where I bought my doughnut from definitely had stacks of doughnuts ready in what appeared to be an oven. So they were either made in store or it is a elaborate hoax on par with the Georgia bigfoot.

As for the cost I wouldn't doubt it costs twice as much as in Canada. My doughnut cost me $2.30 AUD.

Naw, when KK opened you would have thought it was The Phantom Menace the amount of hype surrounding it. Lines up and all, and two kids from Edmonton happened to be the first in line.

Ya, I know they make them in an oven, in huuugge tray stacks. But in Canada/US, they have these massive factory sized machines that are basically a giant doughnut assembly line type setup. It squirts the dough into the oil, then gets flipped and dried. Then off to the waterfall of glazing, then drying again. All in front of your eyes. It massive.

And yah, a doughnut at Tim Hortons is like ~.90CAD

I think they have that assembly line device at one of the ones on George Street. I have definitely seen this before I have never been to any of the ones in Canada.

How much is a doughnut at Krispy Kreme in Canada?

Last time I bought them (over 18 months ago I think) a dozen was about $8.

Forget what a single was.

Haven`t had a donut of any description for probably over 20 years. When you`re...um...older like me, it`s good to stay away from stuff like this and eat healthy. Not saying I always eat only healthy food, but I do try. I`m nutrition conscious. KK donuts? Not sure I'd eat one even if someone paid me to do it.

Trust me when I say, "there aint no Krispy Kreme in Edmonton!" My wife would be frequenting that place every week if that were the case. There was supposed to be one opening for the last few years, but nada.

They may have only had one store, but for a while there you could get KK's in a ton of locations around the city, check out the rest of the thread for some locations mentioned...at least 2 within 10 blocks of my place in Bankview, both gas stations/C-Stores that only had a limited flavour supply and it was unknown how old they were. I think this helped in killing off the 'mystique' of Krispie Kreame.

Krispie Kreme = 1 ounce of donut and 3 ounces of sugar..no wonder they stayed fresh.

Good riddance.
