Why? Isn't the main reason that Nato went into Yugoslavia mainly because Kosovo accepted the international plan for their future and Milosevic rejected it?

If you were to compare the 2 situations then NATO would have to bomb Georgia.

I'm skeptical here but in a way I think that NATO involvement is exactly what Georgia wants.

Its pretty hard to defend Georgia in this, when reports indicate that they're killing civilians. Intentionally.

NATO can't and won't do anything about this other than ask for restraint. Georgia was recently turned down for NATO membership and this is exactly why. Not too many NATO countries welcome war with Russia.

Whether or not this is confirmed, the current Georgia regime are no angels. There is a reason that Ossetians want out.

Yeah, and most of those reports came from Russian sources, so its very far from being confirmed.

Excellent article by Gwynne Dyer, and pretty much says how Georgia is not innocent in this whole mess, and how in six months time, this little skirmish will be long forgotten. I tend to agree. The only difference between this firefight and ones before it is that now it's getting major media attention.

I'd be willing to bet that a cease-fire is in place in a few days; this conflict cannot and will not last.

LOL! You can always rely on Georgie to screw things up!

"It now appears that an effort may be underway to dispose Russia's duly elected government"

Video half way down at 46 seconds.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7554507.stm

Also: "There's evidence that Russia may soon begin bombing the civilian airport in the capital city.

These reports are accurate."
(sound familiar?)

Now there's a rumor the Russians are going to defend the Iranians.

"Reports in the Kremlin today are stating that Prime Minister Putin has ordered the Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation to put the Volga-Urals Military District and Black Sea Fleet on ‘full war alert’ to prepare for the defense of the Iranian Nation against what is being termed as an ‘imminent attack’ being planned by the Western Powers.

Also also ordered was the destruction of all oil pipelines going through Georgia to the West."

I have no clue if this site has any credence thus why i said "rumor"

Has the bored and angry Russian Bear awaken from its long hibernation?

This could get very ugly with Bush still in power

I don't know what Iran is like these days, but back in the 80s and 90s, the only country they hated as much as the U.S. was Russia. It would turn out to be quite a bizarre turn of events to see them as allies in the near future.

And what exactly with the 'Black Sea Fleet' do if the Turks don't let them get out of the Black Sea?

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush consulted Tuesday with fellow leaders in Eastern and Western Europe about the crisis in the former Soviet republic of Georgia while aides scrambled to evaluate a Russian promise to stop attacking its neighbor. The White House also rejected a Russian call for Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to step down.

Earlier, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev ordered a halt to its military action in Georgia, saying the campaign had brought security in its South Ossetia region that is close to Moscow.

The Black Sea fleet is still formidable, but its nowhere near the power fleet that it used to be. Its mostly a anti-submarine/destroyer fleet centered around the Moskva which is a gas turbine powered missile cruiser which carries the ss-n-12 sandbox missile which is designed to kill carriers.. With the addition of two subs one of which is an ancient Kilo class the blacksea fleet really doesn't project power, has little in the way of on call air cover. Its also on a shorter supply line then a fleet centered around nuclear propulsion.

However what might make the fleet more powerfull if they choose to deploy it in full is the 10 smaller missile boats that are probably excellent for in close shore work.

But I don't think that the black sea fleet would do well against an American carrier based task force, or a Nato based task force built around a carrier.

Just for kicks.
