Question What are your thoughts on smoking pot for recreation?

I did a search on this so I hope it's not a FATA, but here goes. I have friends who do and don't... and in my circle it seems that both sides see it as fairly harmless.

It does seem to create a faint line in the sand in my circle... in that mostly it's a social thing and people generally prefer to smoke it with someone. People who don't smoke seem to feel sometimes like they wish it wasn't a factor, ie: they view stopping for a bowl before going to a movie as an inconvenience.

I smoke casually -no more than a few times a week- and I haven't found it to really have any negative effects on my memory or anything after a year or two.

Do you think it's stupid? Are you okay with it? Why?

I have a lots of friends that do it and it doesn't really bother me. The thing that does bug me is a lot of people who smoke pot think they need it to have a good time. I used to smoke it back in high school but I find it kind of pointless now.

I smoked a fair bit of pot when I was younger, and I don't see it as a big deal if people use it recreationally. I found it did lead to burn out after a few years, and in my case it also caused mild depression. I eventually got bored with it and quit. That was about the time that I was getting married, starting a career, having kids and all that stuff. Pot just no longer interested me. As a parent, I'd rather my kids didn't smoke it, but if they ever do I wouldn't view it as an earth shattering problem, not like if they were to turn into Liberal voters or something serious like that.

most things in moderation are fine. I'm one of few that I know who has never touched the stuff. I'd probably like it wayyyy too much. Smoked cigarettes for years, got hooked quite easily. And seeing my burnout uncle (not a moderate user) turn into a shell of a man probably helped my decision to not use it.

Hmm... that makes me think actually. Sometimes I do think it makes certain things more fun... mostly watching funny movies and stuff though. I think it more enhances certain things than really makes them what they are though.

I find there are 2 types of pot-smokers:
1) Those who smoke in moderation, for "enhancement" purposes. The social smoker. Not more than splitting 1 or 2 joints a few times a week, month, whatever. The goal in itself is not necessarily to get F-ed up, but rather to change one's perception for a few hours here and there.
2) Those who smoke with the sole purpose of getting as F-ed up as possible. Smoke until they can't speak. Even if it's "only once in a while", this is the type of thing that can get you in trouble.

It's the same thing for me as alcohal... Going out for drinks and get blitzed once in a while with your friends, blowing off some steam, this is a healthy thing to do (in my opinion). But if you are drinking for the sole purpose to get as F-ed up as you can, as quickly as you can, and as often as you can, then you're in trouble. My take anyway.

I might partake in a toke maybe two times in a year at most. I find nothing wrong with using it once in a while getting your party on, but I think using it to enhance your everyday experiences is kinda pathetic.

I'll add and agree, just Do what you want as long as you don't harm anyone else.

unless they're one of those idiots at a concert that feels the need to light up a new one every 5 minutes. Maybe I'll bring a water pistol to the next show I go to. I've never understood the whole "I need to get wasted to enjoy the show" mentality. That goes for booze, drugs, whatever. Why pay $80+ to go to a show you won't remember afterward?

The only thing that bothers me is the possibility that I might be perpetuating violence or something by buying something illegal. I know my "dealer" is close to the source, but I sometimes wonder if somewhere up the line there's someone breaking necks or something... mind you, it's their own fault I guess for getting involved...

i've never done it. it's illegal, and really that's how i see it. if someone else wants to do it, whatever, it's not my problem, but i'm not gonna sit there and hang out while others get high or whatever. it's pretty lame when some 35 year old dude "needs" to smoke weed. i guess i just don't get it.

I have friends who are on both sides of the line and it has not become a huge problem. I feel that as long as you take the time to consider your company/situation, and can speak freely and honestly then you most likely can do what you like without breaching anyone's comfort level.

I personally smoke daily, ranging from 1-4 times a day and have only a few problems with it. I find that I can't bull/shoot the back and forth with people who are not high if I am. I also prefer not to be high around family and employers for personal comfort issues even though both groups are aware of my choices.

I do like to smoke before seeing movies/events that I am looking forward to in advance. Going to a good comedy or movies like the new batmans are very enjoyable for me since I find that I zone into the movie, opposed to zoning out like an airhead. I also find it useful to wind down after strenuous activity or as a pain relief if you do not like taking pills.

*at the OP: it is not stupid, i am okay with it, and it is not an inconvenience to stop for a bowl before a movie

I can't stand that, especially in a closed environment. Go ahead and smoke up if you want, but be respectful and do it outside where I don't have to smell it. I've never understood stoners and their hypocrisy on why they should be able to smoke pot wherever they want but smokers should have to go outside.

I have smoked weed regularly since about 2001 except took one year off from smoking it in 2005(pu--y whipped), I don't find it effects my life too much except if I am already high and need to drive somewhere, which I don't do anymore, but if that is the case usually a friend will grab me if we are going out or I just will stay home.

I have been thinking about quitting for the last 3 months since I want to change jobs and I don't think I will thrive like I want to if I can't be available basically 24/7. I will doing so once the camping season is over, its too hard to get away from it at camping, its as important as water

My memory has been horrible all my life so I don't notice a difference with that and my motivation seems fine as right now I work about 50-60hrs a week and wake up 5 days a week between 530-630am and go to the gym before work. I eat pretty healthy and I don't drink alcohol.

Main reason for wanting to quit though is my little brothers they are getting to that age where they will soon know what it is and over at my place more and more as they get older, and personally I do not want them doing it so me preaching not to do it while I do seems stupid.

I always said as long as it didn't effect my life, e.g. missing work to smoke it, I was fine with it. It hasn't so far and I don't think it ever will.

Used to do it, did a whole schwack of it when I was travelling, and now have completely stopped. It's just a waste of time now.

If you have time sit around and smoke pot, you have time to volunteer, or exercise, or do something productive for society.

Or have sex. Seriously, I know for a fact that I smoked more pot when I was single.

don't do drugs (unless you count beer) but couldn't care less if people smoke dope.

Used to smoke about a quarter a day until my daughter was born, which was for about 6 years (18-24). Yes, I spent an ungodly amount of money on it, but I was young and had a ton of disposable income. Loved it, didn't want to do anything without it. Wake up, burn one. Eat breakfast, burn one. Head to work, burn one (you get the point). Basically quit after my daughter was born, now I smoke maybe once every three months and don't miss it at all. The difference in just my motivation and energy levels is amazing.

That said, smoke it if you got it. There isn't exactly a huge rash of weed related assaults. "Dude! Those were, like, my Doritos. Man, give them back. Oh look, a funny cartoon. Wanna smoke another joint?"

Illegal or not I don't see it as a problem, go to town.
