Bizarre crash kills woman in Saddle Ridge
http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loc...ub=CalgaryHome
Quote:
A 29-year-old woman is dead and a four-year-old is recovering in hospital after being hit by a car being driven by someone learning to drive.
The woman in her 20s was apparently learning how to drive when she lost control of the vehicle.
Police say the driver reversed quickly across the street and hit a home. She then sped forward and ran over the woman and child standing on the opposite side of the road before crashing into the steps of another home next door.
|
So, I need someone to explain to me how this could happen. First time driving you kill a woman, critically injure a young child and damage 2 homes. I wonder if this woman will ever be able to get behind the wheel again, part of me hopes no...
I am not trying to make light of the fact that someone died but wow, what a messed up situation.

This whole story deserves a giant WTF. Not only does the driver reverse into a house across the street, then run over two people... but one of the victims is her sister? So strange.

The girl's sister is the victim...

This makes no sense, if you back into a house fast enough too cause that much damage what would possess you to than speed forward, into two people no less

So the victim was her sister? Hmm, I must have missed that part in the article. But it is still a messed up situation. You'd think after smoking the house in reverse, the woman would have sat still and not done anything. How she managed to put the car back into drive and speed forward is beyond me. I'm thinking she mistook the gas pedal for the brake?

I saw a girl pull into a parking stall in front of a blockbuster once...instead of hitting the break, she hit the gas. She ended up driving right into the store. It was a good thing nobody was in the way, but she managed to make a huge mess. I think she was just learning too.
It's sad that it was her sisiter. I can't imagine having to live with something like that.

If you are learning and you panic, it would be fairly easy to try for the brake, but hit the gas pedal instead. I have done it once or twice, but never ran into buildings or people for that matter.
Another thing to add, people should learn on manual transmissions. If you screw up, the engine cuts out.

The thing is she would have to consciously change from reverse into drive and then stomp on the gas...

I was referring more to 81flames who was talking about the girl driving into the block buster.
The main story is still messed up though, and yes should have consciously changed from reverse to drive. She did back into a house, probably panicked at that point, and applied way to much pressure on the gas.

If you're going to teach someone to drive, a vacant mall parking lot would be a better option. At least if you apply too much gas you won't hit anyone.

The thing I can't wrap my head around is how much time (hell, even in seconds) must have passed between her absolutely smashing up the back of the car, her changing gear, and then powering forward to mow down her sister and niece?
Did the sister and niece not hear/see the incident if they were that close? Would there not have been enough time to react in some way? Unless she meant to hit them I don't see how they could have just been mowed down with adequate time to react?

This just spins in my head, the ability to pull of that much damage in a matter of seconds.

Very bizarre and tragic story I think. Here's a link to the story along with some more details of the accident. http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=702525
From what I gather from this story I find it very weird that the women was inside the vehicle alone, and her sister was supervising outside of the vehicle.
It's also really sad that the daughter of the deceased women doesn't comprehend that her mom isn't coming back. This accident will definitely be hard on the family members involved.

The lesson: Use an empty mall parking lot to learn how to drive. Not a crowded suburban community. Also, have the instructor in the car with you and have a learners license.
This has Darwin Award Winner written all over it. Common sense, people!
