Greyhound incident doesn't seem so bad now.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7539944.stm
They should've tased him right off the bat. Cop get's slashed face, runs over women on a motorcycle... THEN police open fire with bullets and injure a bystander? Geez

That is so f-up! I cannot believe none of those people in the bus heard the stabbing and maybe did something but I guess they were scared. What a way to die for this guy. I was absolutely stunned that something like that will happen in the bus with a lot of people. Are we going to see some type of airport security now after this incident? It's just to show that there are a lot of psychos in this world now.

I haven't posted on this incident until now because I've been at somewhat of a loss to think or say about it, other than how horrible and tragic.
I'm at a particular loss as to whether I think this guy should be given the death penalty or not. I have a relative who is a paranoid schizophrenic, and when she goes off her medication she does some pretty weird stuff which she never remembers afterwards ... stuff like strolling down the street nude, threatening to kill her parents and such. If she were to ever do something like this, hypothetically speaking, I don't know what I would advocate for punishment. Would I want her to be given the death penalty? Or would I want her to be institutionalized for life where her medications could be controlled and she would be allowed some kind of a life? I honestly don't know. Would I hold her accountable for her actions while in a psychotic state in which she doesn't know what she's doing, and won't remember her actions afterwards? I don't know. Complicating her situation is the fact that her paranoid schizophrenia was caused as a result of her cancer treatments that started when she was two years old and lasted until she was 16, so her condition was artificially induced by her medical treatments, aka "the system".
At this point I don't know what this guy's mental condition was like, or what caused it, and what kind of a state he was in when he murdered the bus passenger. I read in the Herald that acquaintances recognized he had a mental disorder, but he refused to seek treatment. If he was suffering from a mental disorder he could hardly be expected to make a rational choice about getting help.
It's hard for me to view him in the same light as a Willie Picton or Clifford Olsen. Guys like that were monsters who committed their crimes over a prolonged period of time and as far as I know they haven't been diagnosed with a clinical mental disorder. I think Picton and Olsen should be executed, but this case isn't as clear cut to me because of the guy's probable mental disease, and knowing what my relative is like. Executing him won't bring back his victim's life or erase the trauma he caused everyone connected to the incident ... other passengers, emergency responders, families. He certainly should never be released to the public ever again, but if he's legitimately an extreme mental disease victim, what does killing him prove? It's vengeance, but is it justice?
What a tragic, messed up story.

There is a 90 second recording online of the cops responding as the killer is at the front of the bus (on youtube, yahoo, and other major sites).

I listened to that.
It pretty much confirms that Li cannibalized the body.

At the risk of derailing the thread, where did you hear this? There's never been any link between chemotherapy and schizophrenia. If you must point the finger somewhere, blame your genes, not "the system".

And now there is the hammer rampage in Vancouver.
http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/n...a-bcfe20f18c54
I don't know much about the bus murderer, but this hammer attack guy was well known to police who knew all about his mental illness. There has to be a way to keep these people off the streets and force them on their medications. I know there is a rights issue here... you can't lock people up until they commit a crime. But we are talking about people that need help and don't have the faculties to get that help. Left to their own devices we end up with knife attacks and hammer attacks.

Sorry but that doesn't even come close to being as gruesome and random as this bus attack, not even near the same ballpark. Every time I hear something new about this bus attack it makes my stomach turn. I really thought I was desentisized to most violence and gore but then this happened...

Reports are now indicating that the accused (Li) chatted to one of the victim's coworkers at the front of the bus shortly before killing the victim.
Quote:
The seeds for Tim McLean's brutal murder on board a Greyhound bus last week may have been planted when the man accused of his murder, Vince Li, spent nearly an hour chatting up the victim's co-worker during their ride through western Manitoba, the Winnipeg Free Press has learned.

Wow, you think police would have detained that girl for sure. Instead of just getting a "brief statement" from her. I mean she hung out and talked with the killer for a full hour and had smoke breaks with him. Then he leaves her seat, sits with the victim and moments later attacked him.

Hopefully this Stacy girl will come forward and revile the details of her conversation with Li. Hopefully she can give some information that can lead to charging Li with first degree murder. Although according to that family’s description of him it sounds like he is mentally ill.

No reason to rely on the Stacy girl coming forward. The police won't be done with her yet... the investigation is just getting started. I'm sure they will be speaking to her and a few others that were on the bus again. Not sure why they should have detained her?

There's no doubt in my mind that Li will get the same kind of sentence as the girl that left her two children to starve while she went on a sex and drugs party rampage.
She was in and out of an institution in about 3 years.

Yeah, the two are pretty comparable, neglect vs decapitation and alleged cannibalism...

And there you have it - people who knew Li before the attack said he likely suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, which was my gut reaction to a killing like this. If he gets a mental assessment and is diagnosed as such, then the best answer was always the simplest one. One that I can actually stomach.
If this was a man who did it out of pure hatred for other people or was some sort of ritual or gang initiation, I would be far, FAR more worried.
This was a freak incident that rarely happens. And as such, I would not be any less willing to take the bus or any other mode of transportation now than I was a week ago.

I think in a lot of ways they are quite similar.
She let her children starve to death while she abandoned them to go party. Then she hid the body of one never to be discovered. She felt no regret about in, she basically put herself in front of the kids and basically let them die.
While his crime was certainly violent, they were both distastful, and they both have a basis in mental illness, which our judges seem to use as a crutch to go easy on the suspect while not caring about the victims.

Unless the person poses a threat to himself and others you can't put them in psych ward nor can you force them to take thier meds. Something i would agree that needs to be changed.
