U.S. agents can seize travelers' laptops: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. federal agents have been given new powers to seize travelers' laptops and other electronic devices at the border and hold them for unspecified periods the Washington Post reported on Friday.
Under recently disclosed Department of Homeland Security policies, such seizures may be carried out without suspicion of wrongdoing, the newspaper said, quoting policies issued on July 16 by two DHS agencies.
Agents are empowered to share the contents of seized computers with other agencies and private entities for data decryption and other reasons, the newspaper said.

Okay, first of all, the 4th amendment doesn't apply when you cross the US border, so I'm actually surprised that this 'law' only came into effect now.
BUT, how much time are they going to waste scanning through laptops only to find absolutely nothing?

That's what they like to do... I've had so many fun times at US borders. Last June I was handcuffed in front of many people at the Peace Arch when my name matched that of someone who had a warrant out for their arrest. Yeah, same name, but how do I, a 6ft 3, caucasian brown haired male look anything like a 5 ft 10 Filipino?
Even though they let me go, my lawyer said it will always be on the US Department of Homeland Security computer that I have been detained and denied entry. Every time I want/need to go to the USA I have to bring a legal document with me.
Oh yeah, they seized my cellphone and laptop.

this is old news. They have been doing this under the Patriot Act or some other similar legislation for a long time. They have caught some child porn perverts this way, but for the other 99.99999999% of the population, the larger concern is that they can store the information they look at and not tell you - which includes personal information as well as business information, even if confidential.

So they could technically seize a lawyers laptop and have access to all his clients information (if stored in a laptop)?
Will this effect people who may have illegally downloaded videos/programs?

Hasn't effected me when I go to Alaska for work, but man that would suck to have my work laptop seized. Being away from home for so long is alright annoying before having to deal with that crap.

Man..Im coming to Calgary tomorrow and was going to bring my laptop so I could do work on the plane. It's so annoying to deal with all of this. First I have to basically strip to get through security, then I have to empty all my liquid items into a plastic bag and show it to them...and now they are going to steal my computer. OH GREAT. I just want to see my family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Airports are rediculous sometimes. While travelling a couple months ago, I wanted to have a bottle of water and not pay $5 for it, so I fit a small bottle into one of those stupid bags that you are allowed a certain amount of liquid. Well, after going through security check, the airport security says you arn't allowed water, and I'd have to drink it there. What the eff?

I don't know if they still do, but the airport in Fort St. John, they had a vending machine right at the area where people would line up to go through security. I saw quite a few times where people would buy a drink only to get in confiscated by the FSJ airport gestapo a few minutes later (most of the time still unopened).
