White, black, yellow, brown, red, indigo, taupe... doesn't affect - one way or the other - the gravitas of what happened on that bus. Even if, for the sake of argument, this was a Native guy killing a white dude or an Asian guy slaying a black dude it doesn't matter. That is insane. I was just on a Greyhound bus last week. That is absolutely disgusting that a beheading took place on the bus. I can't even imagine the scene on the bus at the time of the incident. RIP to the poor guy who was killed. That's a chilling and frightening story. Ugh.

couple thoughts:
From PSYC courses, the first thing that happens in a tramatic situation is that you freeze. Your brain is trying to make sense of an irrational situation. I'm sure the passengers on the bus are thinking in hindsight how they could have tackled the gunman or shot him with perfect accuracy if they had some sort of gun on them. It's flight or fight, and people normally go with the flight reflex unless you have been trained to react in high pressure situations (SWAT, military,..etc) or you have a bond or relate to the victim (family, rescuing a child or older person)

I totally agree in most cases. If there are different races involved in a crime, everyone jumps to that conclusion for no reason.

In this case, I brought it up as there is really no apparent motive, and that just seems more likely to me than a completely random killing. Just my opinion though, maybe it is more likely it's random.

OT: I forgot to add. Incidents like this are when I support the death penalty. I don't care if he was "insane" or not, and I know people will say "You're not insane, so you can't know what it's like to be in his state of mind".....but screw it. I'd be all for giving the death penalty to this guy. Insane or not, he killed an innocent 18 year old man by stabbing him atleast 30 times and cut his head off. I'm tired of hearing about getting all the "help" for the killers out there and not worrying about victims/innocent people. This whole story is in messed up.

Reporter: Murmur murmur murmur?
Police Officer: I don't know.

Repeat.

One reporter was trying desperately to get the guy to say the classic "even senior officers say they've never seen anything like it" but he wouldn't do it. He even asked him straight out "have you ever seen anything like this before" but the officer wouldn't bite and said "yeah, I've seen this kind of thing before".

Then they ran another interview with that dude who was sitting directly in front of the victim and then helped hold the door shut. He said that the killer got a big heave-ho on the door and they thought he was coming out so they ran around the side of the bus and were looking underneath to see his feet. He didn't come out though so they went back and the driver was able to close the door.

I haven't had a news story give me the willies like this in a while.

But no bus is safe now if you think about it, unless they do security screening for weapons first. Unless you're going with someone, aren't you going to be looking over your shoulder at the person next to you after a story like this?

Depends on your mindset.

The odds of some lunatik chopping your head off on a bus are just as remote today as they were yesterday morning. There is little doubt that many people choose to live in a world of fear and paranoia. I'm not one of them. This incident wouldnt change my mindset when stepping onto a bus one bit.

You would honestly have to be pretty insane to cut off someone's head, I don't see any copycat guy really going "hey thats cool, I'm gonna try that too"

Does a crime automatically trigger a copycat crime?

If it were a successful crime (like getting away with a bank heist) I think it may be more probable.
But something heinous like this? I don't know, it would take someone seriously unstable to contemplate copying this crime, and I'm not sure someone that unstable would be patient enough to try and copy something else, but I'm just guessing.

Any psych majors care to put their education on display?

That is completely NOT logical! It's a random event. You're no worse off traveling by bus, just like you're no worse off flying on an airplane after 9/11. It's ridiculous to be afraid of a bus now.
