Just watched the extended video of Gaton with CTV...He didn't say anything new, except that the killer was either Chinese or Native.

Honestly, this is the complete wrong thread for gun crime advocates to be pressing things like CCW.

The victim was dead no matter what.
Nobody else injured.
Attacker in custody.

Seriously. How could giving people the right to carry concealed weapons cause this to turn out any better?

I don't understand why the race of either the victim or the killer is any more relevant than the race of the bus driver. In other words, I don't think it's relevant at all.

It's not, but depending on skin color, it could have been labeled as a hate crime. Way too early to say at this point though.

Damn, that is sick and crazy at the same time. I've taken a Greyhound once in my life (Calgary to Vancouver), and joked at the time that I wanted to get the "full Greyhound experience". Well, the bus broke down halfway through the trip, and we later had to transfer buses at 2 in the morning. I figured the only thing worse was if they lost our luggage... guess I was wrong. Yikes!

Well if I was in the right position and the guy wasn't built like a linebacker, I would like to stop it because who's to say he wouldn't have killed me (hypothetically) or several other passengers on the bus immediately after??
I think if one person would have "manned up", others would quickly follow in that situation.
Hopefully a fellow inmate ends this guy's life.

6'0", 200 lbs isn't linebacker size to you? You must be a big guy. I'll bet the majority of the passengers weren't that size....I don't blame them for running. 99.9% of people would do the same thing.

You would have to be built like REDVAN to take on that guy.

I like to think I'm capable of doing the right thing and have proven in the past to work well in pressure-filled or emergency situations. Notwithstanding all that, I'm almost 100% certain I wouldn't have intervened in that situation. Like most, I would have either fled in terror or stood frozen in fear.

Mikey's comment about others quickly following if only someone would "man up" reminded me of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Burton

As Res pointed out above, the victim stood no chance. This was the best possible outcome for all others involved. I don't think things would have been any better had the passengers got together to stomp the crap out of the killer. Two dead bodies probably isn't any better than one dead body.

What a sick story.
This is why the death penalty should be brought back. This guy will just plead "insanity" and get out of jail in about 10 years.
He should hang.
I really don't think you have the right to judge the other passengers as wimps until you're in their situation. Pretty easy to post on a message board what you think you'd do .... being there would be something altogether different.

Was I the only one who heard the phrase "There can be only one" as I read this story this morning?

as someone who does management in the bus industry. yikes. that's all i can say. yikes.

ccw isn't necessary. guns should only be in the hands of police, military, and rural people who need them on their farms...

You live in Canada and you've never met anyone with an irrational hate/dislike for all things Native?

It wouldn't surprise me if a majority of Canadians have a problem with Natives, actually. It's always irked me that we put on a face to the world that says we are so welcoming of other races and look down our noses at the US, when we have a massive racism issue between whites and Natives here.

That's probably for another thread though...

Fact is, by the time you would've realized what was going on the victim had already been stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest, he would have been dead by that time or close to it. To avoid more killings, the smart thing would be for everyone to get the hell off the bus, which they did, and nobody else was hurt.

At the risk of derailing the thread, I've long believed that the reservation system is the root of most of that bigotry - which flows both ways quite evenly.

Crazy, the killer probably was mentally insane though.

I take the bus all the time between Calgary and Edmonton, and despite what happened here, I still wouldn't think twice about sleeping on the bus.
