Objective: to draft the team consisting of the best movies
Draft in snake-style to fill the following 18 categories:

Trades! you can make trades but the it has to be zero-sum since every team needs 18 movies. For example Team A can trade the 1st and 40th pick to Team B for the 5th and 6th pick. Even after you have selected a movie you can trade. There is no trade deadline however there will be no trades allowed after the very last pick.
Both parties must send the trade details to me.
Make use of PMs and the chatroom to negotiate.
Switching!
At any time you can switch a movie from one category to another if it qualifies for it.

When you are selecting please state in BOLD letters who you are selecting and in what category.
example: With the 1st overall pick of the draft, GirlySport's In-Box selects ......... in the Best Picture category.
And you can use a paragraph to state your case of why you made this selection and convince everyone why this movie was great. You've seen how it's been done in the other drafts. We're all here to learn!

There is a major argument brewing amongst the scouting staff regarding the first pick of "Team Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-PTANG. Zoom-Boing. Z'nourrwringmm." (Team Ekki for short). It's come down to two possibilities, both with equally impressive credentials. Guess we'll have to see if Dis and Stray make it easy for the Ekki's.

With the first overall pick in the Calgarypuck movie draft, team to be named later is proud to select, in the category of Western...Sergio Leone's masterpiece, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
Simply put, my favorite movie of all time. The final two scenes are two of the best shot scenes in cinema history IMO. Great characters played expertly by Clint Eastwood, the great Eli Wallach and the late Lee Van Cleef. Couple that with outstanding cinematography and one of the greatest movie scores ever and you have a film worthy of this slot in our draft!!

Nice pick Dis. Of course the movie was on my radar as my favourite Western of all time. One of the best movie scores ever, certainly one of the most memorable.
I'm still torn as to my first choice. Too many personal favourites out there. Have to see what StrayBullet will do.

As some one who cant think of a western of the top of my head that Ive seen, or seen half of it before losing interest/falling asleep this will be interesting

Can I get clarification as to what qualifies something as "non-fiction"?
If I read a biography of an historical person, I would consider the book to be non-fiction. If I saw a movie that had actors re-creating the events of that person's life, I don't know if I would still consider it non-fiction. The same could be said for a book about an historical event, compared to a movie that re-creates that event.

George Lucas' Star Wars was the starting point of the greatest epic in the history of film. It took viewers to new heights and captured imagination by combining fantasy, action, drama and romance; all while innovating the world of Hollywood's special effects. As complex and broad as the galaxy, the simple story-line was still about Good v. Evil, the modern-day (for its time), David v. Goliath. Star Wars is the quintessential, science-fiction film.

An account or representation of a person's life (politician), historical events (war) or a subject that is rooted in fact and presented as such (news/tragedy).

With the 3rd overall pick in the CP Movie draft, Team Ekki, is proud to select in the drama category "The Shawshank Redemption."
This was a really difficult decision to make as there are so many excellent movies out there. I was going to go with a pure 'Classic' type at #3 but felt that there was much more of a chance that they will fall to #54, my next pick, than this newer classic. It was difficult though because there were two other movies that will be surely gone by the 2nd round which I was close to taking.
Shawshank, however, is a superb movie full of genuine human emotion. It never fails to move me no matter how many times I see it. I really enjoyed the novella by Stephen King, "Rita Heyworth and Shawshank Redemption" but was concerned about how they would translate this to the screen. I shouldn't have worried. Frank Darabont's screenplay, although differing from the book in places, and direction do the story justice.
Morgan Freeman, one of my favourite actors, does a fantastic job of the narration. He really is a joy to listen to. There are just so many superb characters, besides Andy Dufresne, that have interesting stories to tell. On so many levels this movie is a huge success. It deserved to do better at the box office and it deserved to win at least one of the seven oscars it was nominated for. However, it has been an incredible success story since then in the home video market. It actually has been quite a phenomenon.
Roger Ebert wrote an excellent essay on this very subject when he chose Shawshank as one of his great movies:

fantastic pick though, one of my all time favorites, and without a doubt, one of, if not the best adaptations of a stephen king story

This movie opened at number 6 in 1998 (while Titanic was still enjoying its obscene Number One streak) and grossed less than $50 million worldwide during its theatrical run (box office information here). The film has since become a cult phenomenon, spawning legions of fans and imitators and Rocky Horror-esque midnight screenings where people dressed up as the Dude congregate to get high and drink White Russians.
As a comedy, this movie for me seems to get funnier every time I see it. The laughs don't get old so much as they renew themselves; I've seen this movie so many times with so many people it's almost like a reunion with old friends.
If time permitted I could try to get into a discussion on how this movie subverts the detective genre or its function as a commentary on the Gulf War, but at this point suffice it to say that these deeper contexts make this movie more than just a stoner comedy (which this movie does better than most stoner comedies to begin with); the latter of which being pervasive enough given current the current state of affairs that this movie still has, and will likely continue to have, great meaning as far as a humorous perspective on our Western culture.
I thought about going with a heavyweight selection for the 4th overall pick but I wanted to ensure this film was part of my roster and I think it is a great example of how comedies can be just as effective as, if not moreso than, other genres and styles of film in communicating a provocative and enduring text.
