Default Calgary vs. Vancouver: Don Cayo

http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/n...0-71154fe4aca5

I know it's the Sun, I'm well aware, but I thought it was an interesting blurb on our beloved City. Cayo makes the point that, while Calgary is the overriding corporate powerhouse, Vancouver is a city that was built and exists more for the 'people,' and Calgary exists for the businesses.

Also mentions Calgary (and Alberta) suffers from a lack of social services, poor urban planning, and penny-pinching habits. Nothing new, I know, but always a fun debate.

Thoughts?

That should pretty much sum up the rest of this thread.

Oops I forgot the standard replys about Calgary having no culture.

I don't know--both cities are fantastic in my view. If I had the opportunity I'd move to either Vancouver or Calgary in a heartbeat.

Good catch, that is the usual crap that gets thrown our way in any debate.

I'm all for making fun of Edmonton, but I just can't get into a debate how crappy Vancouver is because I really like it. Outside of Calgary and Vancouver I can't say there's a whole lot of other places in Canada I'd like to live.

That was a really good article and bang on on most points. My wish is that Calgary STOPS growing outward and starts going upward. The next 20 years should be spent developing the existing city. Developing better transportation (read: LRT), the ring road, hospitals, and more fun places that are open to the public like Sikome Lake. Mackenzie Towne is one of the few new neighbourhoods with exemplary planning. Shops and stores, recreation areas to keep the youngins active and out of trouble such as the basketball courts and the rinks and the skate park. The skate park is pure brilliance. Kids will hone their skills on something, it might as well be a sport instead of B&Es like we see in some of the neighbourhoods that have nothing to do within walking distance for a teenager.

A city should be constantly thinking of all generations. Calgary hasn't been doing that. Most of the new neighbourhoods do not have schools. They have one or two kiddie parks. Great. Until the kids become teens.

Calgary just seems so polarized. Many of the communities are not conducive to all ages. That is changing though. Slowly but surely. I think we're catching on that a new community needs a mix of houses and condominiums, commercial, residential and recreational.

Seriously, it's time to stop expanding. Build on land we already have. Fill in the gaps.

To which I will respond that it doesn't rain for 6 months straight and I will also say that it's minus 30ish for more than 2 weeks. And if it's not minus 30, it's min s what minus 15?? I'm totally fine wearing jeans and a lightweigh jacket in March rather than wearing a sweater and a heavy jacket.

Having lived in Calgary for twelve years and moved to Vancouver last fall, there are a huge number of differences between the two cities.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly that makes them different. Those who say Calgary has no culture is severely misinformed or has been spending too much time in that 10 million square feet of office space. I think it's easier for Vancouver to be portrayed as 'more cultured' because people here are generally a bit more laid back and the things we enjoy as a city shine through a little bit more than in Calgary where it's very often 9-to-5 and not much else for a lot of people.

If there is one thing that Vancouver does about twelve times better than Calgary, it's infrastructure. Getting anywhere in Calgary is a pain in the ass even though everyone drives 110. In Vancouver I rarely go above 65 and I still get places faster.

I've lived in both and enjoyed both immensely, but the hockey team in Vancouver sucks hard.

Ya, Granvile street is a dump, Granville Island on the other hand is great. I used to live in False Creek, and bought my groceries down there, cool little spot.

Good lord that is massively untrue if you work in any of the surrounding areas like Burnaby or North Van.

My sister lives in Grainville Island, nice area. I don't mind Vancouver but I would rather live in Calgary, way more ski hills near Calgary than Vancouver.

Nope, they're comparable, but more night life on Granville. Robson is more shopping, but Granville has that as well.
