*From that list....I actually really like the name Liam...and Rhys (pronounced Reese)
But for me (and I apologize if there is anyone on here with this name) but anyone who names their kid Chet is just asking for him to be a giant ######bag

Of course we have to remember that this isn't all new.
I went to high school with a couple of people whose parents obviously hated them...
Anna Graham
and
Richard Lickers. (not so affectionately known as Dick, people were cruel)

They sound like characters from a Sci Fi serial. Why not Flash Gordon?

This thread prompted my husband to discuss baby names..we may have a baby in a year or so. Do you guys think Anya is a wierd name for a girl? We are of East Indian descent but we don't want an Indian name thats too complicated! We want something easy to pronounce. He likes Ella or Elle and I like Anya for girls. I just wanted to know if Anya was too "out there".

Anya (I'm thinking its pronounced anh-nee-ah is actually the Polish pronunciation of Anna (at least the Polish people named Anna that I knew anyway... so please correct if I'm wrong) so I think its a pretty safe name.

Eva = Eve in many Euro languages, so it doesn't fall under the crazy category.

I don't think Anya = Anna in Polish, Anya sounds more Russian.
Polish name would be Ania and that is different than Anna.
Confusing

Ania is the "slang" (not sure if that's the right word) way of saying Anna in Polish, but technically still the same name.

As a Gunn ar, I object to the frenchified spelling your friend applied to a perfectly good scandinavian name.
On topic, my own pet peeve is names that are too creative. The Icelandic tradition is to pick names from your family, and we tried to do that with our daughter, at least with her middle name. I'm a fan of names that are old and traditional--like you can find them in the Bible traditional.

I know a girl named Ania, and she is straight from Poland. I don't think it's a weird name at all actually.

Quebec also requires approval for baby names. It started a few years ago when someone tried to name their child Spatula (yes it has the same meaning in French). The government stepped in and said "sorry, no" and since then has required approval for names.

Thats not true. You have to have a full legal name for the Baby before you leave the hospital.

That must be a fairly recent change. My 11 y/o nephew didn't have a name for 2 weeks...

Nope. But if you leave without a name, your baby get a generic "Baby Whatever" name and you have to pay to have the name legally changed. That is how it was explained to us 3 years ago and my sister-in-law just had a baby and it was the same rules - they ended up paying for a name change.
