Guys thanks for all the youtubes of Steely Dan! A local radio reporter once told me he listens to Steely Dan while vacuuming his house, but my introduction to them was the Two Against Nature record, which my old saxophone teacher taped for me. Now I've managed to add all their 70s records into my LP collection, The Royal Scam and Pretzel Logic definitely my two favs..

Joey Belladonna was still singing for them a couple of years ago on Gigantour, still wearing leather pants. He had the same haircut to boot. It was all I could do to not laugh out loud.
Been gone for 4 days last minute, glad I didn't get AK'd, I couldn't for the life of me remember where the draft was at and it bugged me the whole time I was gone.
A few comments:
- Great pick on Joel Plaskett... He is one helluva a songwriter and an even better human being... He is my sister's husband's sister's husband, so, basically, I'm in his band.
- Can't believe Tom Petty lasted this long, I completely forgot about him.
- Steely Dan would never make it today.
Sorry I'm late guys.
For my latest late pick Temporary will go into the Category of Songwriter and pick up Trent Reznor
When he was 23 years old, Trent Reznor formed the electronic, machine-driven, industrial music project that would launch his career to superstardom. Nine Inch Nails, the name Reznor attached to his creative endeavor, would also completely change his life in a matter of a few short years. "It's a convenient fiction for me to work under," Reznor told Musician when asked why he decided against incorporating his own name with that of the band. Nine Inch Nails-- Reznor's "convenient fiction"--would become musical fact by 1989 when it launched the previously underground industrial music genre into mainstream popularity. Source Link

Dream Theater is one of those bands that I will be exploring further as time goes by. I have had Images and Words for 15 years and love it. Not sure why I have never bought another of their CD's. Great pick, LaBrie really does have an exceptional voice.

Quote from Knocked Up. Always thought it was hilarious, Paul Rudd's character goes on a rant about how they'd never make it in today's music industry, Seth Rogan replies that "Steely Dan can gargle my balls".

Don't worry, I'm a SD fan!
Ah, I see. I haven't seen the movie yet. Actually, I think it's next on my Netflix queue!
I wasn't getting snippy either, I thought you might have been referring to their lack of touring or the prevalence of jazz influence in their music Not cool with the kids today maybe?). I mean really, there is no other band like them that I can recall.

Images and Words is the true gem of their work so you have not missed out on much. Metropolis Pt 2 is a good album as well but to be honest most of their CD's have not been really that great. LaBrie is awesome though on vocals and as a singer I rank him right up there with the best of em.
In that case I take Dream Theater in the East of Mississippi category before somebody else takes them. Thought that they'd be more off the radar and that I could take them in a late round but now I'm worried. They're one of my favourite bands and I wanted to get them on my team.
Amazing band....amazing musicians at every position, and incredibly technical songs. Their live stuff is amazing as well, I was quite disappointed when I had to give up my tickets to them @ Mac Hall this summer....they're the kind of band that can play pretty much anything and pull it off.
Quote:
Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty" by John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess.
Dream Theater has become a successful progressive rock band, despite the drop in popularity of the genre since the mid-1970s. Although the band has had a few successful hits (notably "Pull Me Under" in the early 1990s, which received extensive MTV rotation), they have mostly stayed underground for their career, feeding off support from their fans.
The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians.
I am poised to make my pick, but I have PM'd a category appeal/question to Girly Sports. Not sure if she is online though. Should I just pick and see if it is rejected or wait a bit? Up to you guys. This came to me last second so I apologize for the delay!

She's online quite a bit - might as well wait I can't see it being more than an hour or two.
That is my preference, I just don't want to grind this thing to a halt to the displeasure of anyone.
