On a related note, the local Aryan chapter is now offering to pay damage deposits for any new members looking to move to Calgary. The Sun was carrying the article today on page 2. There's a picture of a fat, ugly bald guy with an SS shirt, and was probably goosestepping around in jackboots when it was shot. It would have been nice if the photographer was carrying around a gun rather than a camera to scare off these stupid arseholes, but I guess I can't have everything!

I think many of us are saying exactly the opposite. Posting your own experiences is exactly what should be done, but that's not what happens.
What actually happens most of the time, is comments like "it happens to white people too, but we're not allowed to say anything", or people complain about the race card in a situation like this where it's clearly appropriate.
The people complaining don't actually back it up with their own examples, and aren't actaully being silenced.

Yeah, I saw that in the paper this morning, and the one thing that really came to my mind after reading all of the quotes was "Gee, am I ever glad that these guys are about half a notch above outright ######ed. Im certain that level of mastery of the english language makes it much easier for them to recruit sound minded individuals."
Holy crap talk about a bunch of country bumkins.

Just another reason to avoid reading the Sun. I'm shocked they actually put that in the paper..
On another note... Anyone see the leader of the Canadian Islamic Congress call Stephen Harper a racist because he's abandoned Omar Khadr in Cuba.?

My comment certainly wasn't meant to throw the thread off the rails into a "poor white people are victims of racism as well" tangent at all and I should have known better than to come close to attacking the CP sacred cow that is racist issues.
The post was made because I honestly did not see it as a racist comment when I first read it. The second part was in jest and should have been in green or orange or wahtever the color is this week.
I do think the whoa is me Alberta is so racist card gets tossed around way too much on CP but I guess if people feel bad/hurt/whatever as the OP does then they have every right to post their experiences.

Is it a racist comment? Yes. Was it a big deal? I don't know. I can tell you, though, that plowing into an old lady is a pretty big deal. In an elderly woman, the smallest fall can cause a hip fracture, and 25% of people who suffer these fractures die within a year of their accident... typically a year of disability and depression. Next time, I hope you'll get off the sidewalk and give the old folks some space. Even if they are jerks.

Where did you get the idea that they plowed into her? Sounds like they did what they could to give the old couple some space.

Plow? Seriously? What would you rather us do? Jump over the rail onto the path below? We were against the rail. There was no plowing. And it's not like they were crippled. They were walking just as steady as we were. They looked about the same age as my mom for frig sakes. My friend even apologized even though there was not much else we could do. Or maybe you'd rather have us jump into the road and into traffic?? Ugh and they could have filed into a single line on the sidewalk like we did, but they insisted on being linked at the arms while passing us.
And even then, how is the comment they made to us appropriate in any way?? I'm not even gonna bother opening this link because it's in no way valid to this conversation.
Absolutely ridiculous.

I can't stand the elderly, this is just another reason on my list, quite a few I meet are blatantly racist and I unfortunately live by quite a few of them, almost makes me want to sell my house and move.

This threads de-railing in a big way, so heres my off-topic post.
White people have a monopoly in racial slurs, I feel bad that there are zero genuinely offensive terms for my race:
Honkey - this sounds like your best friends nick-name 'we can't go out yet, we're waiting on Honkey.'
Cracker - This term just makes me wonder how the word 'cracker' became a racial slur.
Whitey - I could never be offended by something so uncreative.

I agree.
I on occasion refer to my friends by all three of those terms.
Of course black folks refer to each other with what is otherwise the worst racial slur so maybe those three should be offensive.
If I'm supposed to be offended by these could someone please let me know?

...All of which don't even remotely insult me, or other Caucasians I know.
However, if you're classless enough to use any color-based insults, then you should be absolutely ashamed, no matter what race. I also hate when people call others of the same color these same derogatory terms, because then they're just keeping alive an otherwise useless word that should have no place in human speech.

I disagree.
All three slurs for us white folks are totally useful.
See below:
"I'm in the mood to dance, let's go hit that Honkey Tonk joint"
"I'm hungry. I think I'll have some cheese and crackers"
"Gee I'm not sure exactly what colour my walls are. I guess they're sort of a whitey beige or something"
Yes this post was just to be a smart ass, and I'm gonna guess that this doesn't exactly work for slurs of most other races.

DISCLAIMER: I'm whiter then Vanilla Ice in the Antarctic.
What happened to Teh_Bandwagoner is an example of old people being racist and morally superior. There is no arguing this. A comment was said that was derived from the colour of their skin.
I do understand where the "white people face racism too" crowd is coming from. I used to think the same way until I thought about it.
White people do not, and never will suffer from racism in Canada.
The keyword I'm stressing here is "suffer". Yeah, we might be victimized by racism on the street once or twice in our lives, but we do not experience massive inequalities at all levels of society based on the colour of our skin or by our place of birth. So to try and excuse a blatant racist act with this type of argument demonstrates a certain amount of intellectual ignorance to the degree of which whitism has affected differing groups.

I've gotta agree though, I think the racist card is played way to much nowadays. But that's just my opinion I suppose...

I don't know if everyone here is directing the race card is being played too much at the OP, but I don't think what he is doing is playing the race card. He isn't asking for anything but for people to agree that racist people are stupid and can ruin your day. I guess that might be too much to ask for. I don't think that there's any doubt whether the comment was racist, it fits the definition to a T. Grab a dictionary and look it up. Sorry that it doesn't fit your specific definition, but maybe you should write Webster's to update their definition as yours. Is there varying degrees of racism? Yes. I would not rank this up there with lynching or not hiring somebody because of their race, but it's still racist.

It is racist to say stuff like "The natives are getting restless" or "who is calling the kettle black"
I have some Asian friends with an East Indian background and in a discussion one said I could call him a Hindu, I said I couldn't because that was a racist remark. I had to explain that it was used a lot in 80's to describe some people.
He made me see that it desribed his religion and by calling him Hindi/Hindu I was not being a racist. It was hard for me to accept but now I don't view it the sameway.
I was able to travel through parts of United States and Japan and it opened my eyes. I really try and see people for who they are not anything else but it is very tough to do.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/0...ckson_n_word_2
I find the above link to be interesting and also if you visit www.yahoo.ca you will see a link to an episode of View where they discussed the word N...... Interesting on how people view who can and cannot say that word.
