This is very true... almost a "need" to come out and say, "but look, we get it too! Probably more than you!"

I'm not sure that's how Igottago meant it, but good point.

Racism absolutely goes in all directions, but the auto derailment of every racism thread into the same bantering about white people getting it too is ridiculous.
It amazes me that some people feel the need the detract from the topic every-time to remind people that it goes both ways.
It reminds me of when a new baby is born, and the older sibling is desperate to regain attention by distracting from the baby.

If some of you witness as much racism against white people as you say, why not make your own thread about those experiences, instead of detracting from this one?

And those of you saying you're not allowed to talk about racism if you're white, try it and prove it.
Make a thread about racism you've experienced and prove that you're not allowed to bring it up. complete BS

I posted something..but it was situational and I certainly wouldnt equate it with the lifetime of oppression or anything like that. Part of what you say is true..not about wanting attention so much but more like how DARE something like this happen to me. I think that is what causes some of the exaggerations. The saddest part of my situation was that it happened when I was a kid..and NOT ONE of the adults used it as an opportunity for any kind of understanding . Maybe they didnt know how. It just seems that no matter what your race if you're the minority you're at a loss. You may be able to bring it up, but getting anything done about it is the problem. At my job some white people complained about black people getting the promotions..well,they were the only ones who applied so whose fault is that?

Seeing since I have been the main poster in this thread saying that the comment was not racist I will assume (maybe incorrectly) that people saying that whenever a thread about racism comes out someone has to mention "well it happens to white people to" is directed at me.

I only stated that I thought the comment was not racist. The arguements about it can happen to white people started because some posters tried to say that racism can only happen when certain races do it.

We understand; you're in law enforcement and you're a racist

Seriously though, I do not possibly see how what the OP had described was not a racist comment. I mean c'mon... "You're in CANADA now" lol.

I dont think you said anything wrong!! There are people out there who, for some reason ,think it cant happen to white people. I thnk it does. And why should racism against a none-white be more worthy of discussion than racism against a white person? THAT attitude is makes no sense, but some of the posts seem to go in that direction Hmm why would someone put the on one of my other posts what the heck does that mean

Just curious... a thread entitled "I Hate Racism" should be off limits for posting your own experiences with racism if you are white? Is that what you guys are saying?

Nah, but if you are a white person griping about racism directed at you in Alberta you've got thinner skin than an Olsen Twin.

Crazy. That really was unfortunate. That's what happens when you don't invite me to banff. Misfortune befalls you.

As most people know, I am in the law enforcement field. There aren't many things that anger me more than being called a racist when I am doing my job. I am a racist if someone breaks the law and I am enforcing it. I am a racist if I am simply doing a interview or examination. I have been called a racist because the person it a women, black, brown and even white. One time, I was a racist because the group of people that were being dealt with were all white single males.

People throw out the race card way to much and for petty little things that have nothing to do with their race. I treat everyone the same and I have never treated anyone different BECAUSE of their race, gender, sexual preference.

Thats my rant.

I agree that the race card does get thrown out there too much. And often in the wrong context. Your examples are good examples of that.

But in my case, I'm certain that the only reason that comment was made was because of the colours of our skin. I wasn't looking for sympathy nor was I trying to get out of anything. I was just pissed off(and I figure rightly so) that it was directed towards me. It was just a plain situation of me walking up the street and being told I don't belong, when CLEARLY I do, every much as that man.

Agreed. I think cops get it worse.

I know a lady who is Canadian-born Japanese who is a police officer.
She's been call every derogartory remark for being a cop but never one for being Japanese. The uniform overshadows the race.

Being a Native Canadian Indian I have seen a lot of racism in my life, dirty looks for using my status card from the cashier and the customers behind me in line...

Right here on CP as a matter of fact, a member of the Canadian Milatary who posts here speradically once said:

"Natives were a conquered people and should be thankful they were allowed to even live"

This statement really bothered me for a few days after reading it.

They get a discount for gas and smokes if they drive out to the reserve. My native pal used to get cheap smokes for me..

I think it saves you tax on things like cigarettes and gas. I think.

I gotta get me one of those....
