I've often thought about why we (kids in general) weren't more rebellious when it came to going in when recess was over. Maybe we were just well behaved Catholic school kids or something, but we never really stayed out on the field past the recess bell. What would the teachers and principals have honestly done if we just flat out refused to go back to school, and kept playing the games? Did you guys ever disregard the bell?

What amazes me is how long that 15 minute recess seemed. Get on your coat, shoes, etc - make it out to the field. Play what seemed like a FULL game of whatever and still get back in time. 15 minutes! Now 15 minutes goes by in nothing.

we used to run into the woods and smoke cigarettes. But that was jr high....

I understand exactly and often miss beinga kid myself, but then I remember everything that totally, totally sucked about being a kid.

Remember not having control over anything? From bedtime right down to your own thoughts and emotions. Getting picked on and not understanding why - or worse - being the kid that picked on others, even though you knew it was wrong and it made you feel bad, but you couldn't help yourself. Then there was the total confusion over the differences between boys and girls and the endless agonies that caused. Not to forget the shame and horror of getting in trouble from parents, teachers, etc. Older or younger siblings ruining your day, your favourite toys breaking, the savage pain of there being no more freezies in the freezer. Being forced to take a bath; the rage and impotent anger you felt over being forced to take a bath, your best friend turning on you for some stupid reason that seemed so, so important at the time. Other kids being just as insane, irational, and exitable as you.

And the big one: having someone tell you "You'll understand when you're older."

Kids don't get enough credit for the crap they go through every single day just being a kid.

You play as a truck driver, running around Canada to gather "commodities" that are unique/related to the cities and towns you collect them from, all the while crashing your truck, speeding, and picking up hitch-hikers who may or may not jack your loot.

I just remember that our classroom only had one colour computer, so if you got to hit up Cross Country on that thing, you were the toast of the class with everyone else yelling "drive this way" and others yelling at mini-604 who may or may not have kept a list of which commodities were in which towns.

In my elementary and jr. high days (not too long ago) we played lots of Red Ass, basketball, kickball, and 7 Up for cold days or to use up time.

When I was in grade school we had to use things like imagination, and make up our own games and stuff.
Although, I played Magic: The Gathering in high school. No wonder I got beat up..

Pogs were actually an old fad from like the 1940s or 50s that was brought back in the 80s and 90s - although I think they were called something else.

Also, the Pokemon concept is actually old too. I think in the 1800s, the Nintendo company used to specialize in card games.

In elementary school, did anyone play that "jump-the-ball" game at recess where you throw the ball against the wall and then kids line-up to jump it... and occasionally get bagged.

In grade 5 and 6 we used to convince our Language Arts teacher to let us play mini hockey in class all the time. We would tilt all the desks front face down and create a small rink inside the class. A couple students would bring 4 or 5 of those miniature plastic sticks and a tennis ball and everyone scooted along on their knees. Man, our knees took a serious beating on those ceramic type floors...just red and raw everyday.

We use to play TV tag a lot when we were like 6-7. Essentially, it was tag, but as you were about to be tagged, you would bend down and yell out a name of a tv show.....so back then, it would be like "COSBY SHOW" or "MATLOCK".....and you had to keep on using different TV shows.

Lots of that, hide and seek, soccer, Butt's Up and football. I miss elementary school.

I used to cheat at that game so bad. The key was to put your head on your arm on your desk, but leave space between your arm and the edge of your desk.

That way, you could look down at the person's shoes when they came by to touch your thumb.

Another awesome game we played after school and on weekends was Nicky Nicky Nine Door.

There are tons of variations of it, but it basically involves ringing people's doorbells and running away without getting chased or caught.

Some kids tried to get my house about 2 weeks ago and I was delighted. It was pretty hilarious being on the other side of the prank. You know you're old when........
Except for the fact that it was still light outside so I could see who they were and where they ran to. Amatures. I was hoping they'd come back and ring it again so that I could chase them a bit!

LOL! I forgot about that game... I remember taking it to extremes a few times. There'd be two of you, one would hit the doorbell about 15 times and the other one pounds the crap out of the door, then you run like hell. Don't wanna get caught by that guy!
