Quebec Sovereigntist Won't Let It Be

MONTREAL -- He will be wielding a bass guitar, not a musket, but Paul McCartney's free concert this Sunday on Quebec City's Plains of Abraham has some sovereigntist politicians and artists complaining of another British invasion.

In an open letter endorsed by two Parti Québécois Members of the National Assembly, Quebec City painter and sculptor Luc Archambault informs McCartney that he should learn some French songs before coming to perform as part of Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations

"The presence of your English-language music on the most majestic part of Battlefields Park, as beautiful as it might be, can't help but bring back painful memories of our Conquest," Mr. Archambault writes.

Calling McCartney an "international Anglo-Saxon idol," he asks him to use his performance to make a plea for the sovereignty of the Quebec people. That, Mr. Archambault says, would display the same sensitivity to "the people of French Quebec" as the ex-Beatle has already shown to "the fate of the seals."

How do you say "###### you loser" in French? That's all Paul should really worry about learning.

I would think that ANY concert at a place called "Battlefields Park", which I would assume is on the Plains of Abraham, would bring back "painful memories of our Conquest."

Of course, the idea that the "Conquest" was objectively painful is rather hard to support; as I recall, Quebec was ruled by the absolutist French regime at the time, which was toppled no more than 30 years later by its own incensed citizens; replacing that with an British regime that preserved their laws and religion (which, btw, was a contributing factor to the American Revolution as many in the English colonies vastly resented the granting of said rights to people they regarded as Popish barbarians) simply meant they traded one faraway master for another. Nevermind the almost certainty that if they had not been subsumed by the British Empire then, they would have been sold off to the USA at the same time Napoleon sold off Louisiana, for the same reasons, and more than likely would have been, again like Louisiana, transformed into people of American culture and language.

Which, on the plus side, would be sparing us now the resentments of idiots like this guy that can't let go of the past and would rather nurse ancient grievances than celebrate current accomplishments.

They don't want to seperate, they want to be able to hold the Canadian people and the government hostage for more and bigger gifts and handouts.

They know that a seperate Quebec would be economically crushed.

I've always said that a strong prime minister would go on the air during the next referendum and state

You want to seperate, find seperate, but your going to pay your share of the national debt before you go, compensate Canada for Federal property and infrastructure. Hold a referendum for the Natives on whether or not they want to join your country. Pay taxes on the use of the sea lanes. You will have no representation in Parliment, and every Quebec citizen working for the Federal Government will be terminated immediately upon your declaration. You cannot share our currency nor our passports. All Federal contracts will be cancelled immediately as well. All members of the RCMP and the military will be removed immediately. You cannot share our embassies abroad and Quebec will no longer be represented by Canada at the G8 or the UN.

If they want a country, they should take pride in the fact that they didn't need any help or anything from the hated anglo's who held them down for so long.

We'll even help out by getting all of Canada's english pop stars together to sing a new version of "We are the world" while film shows planes with Canadian logo's on them delivering much needed Latte's and bottles of wine to Quebecs citizens.

Si Quebec etait comme s'est soucie de devenant independant et ne comptant pas sur le reste du pays, comme ils sont sur le point de perdre leur culture presumee a nous, ils pourraient separer en fait.
