This is what I posted in the last Redvan and 4x4 thread.
This isn't a new law there, it just isn't enforced too much.

Right, right, let's not get into that ridiculous discussion again. I'm talking about the unwritten rules like that on city streets that aren't quite freeways but are bigger than neighborhood streets - like Crowchild, Glenmore, etc.

Man I wish there'd be a police campaign on this every once in awhile. As everyone here knows, left laners are one of my biggest pet peeves.

Sometimes you're just in a fast mood and you want to get to where you're going without any bullcrap along the way. When you've got a bluehair poking along in the left lane on deerfoot going 100, it's just aggravating. It's selfish and thoughtless to not look in your rearview to see if you're holding up traffic.

The whole attitude of "I'm not breaking any laws, so you can just stay behind me and kiss my ass" is so typically Calgarian. Why does this city have so many a-hole drivers?

On sunday, I was driving north on Crowchild over the Bow trail interchange. I know that the right lane eventually exits to Memorial, so I started my lane change well in advance. The pr1ck in the lane beside me accelerated when I signaled that I wanted in in front of him.
That's a quick way to tick me off, so I gave it a little boost and forced my way into the lane. Of course, the guy flips out and starts giving me the bird...
Seriously, who are these people that accelerate when you signal and why are they such dicks?

Same as the people that clog up the left lane and then accelerate when you slip into the middle lane to pass them. Like they think they're the police or something and that everyone should go their speed.

I've given up getting mad in merge lanes, and have actually started looking forward to these exchanges with a-holes when I try to keep the flow of traffic moving. I drive a rather large diesel truck, so I employ the "head fake", or the "drift". Start moving into their lane regardless of their position, (sometimes employing a subtle swerve) and so far I've been 100% successful in forcing the guy beside me to make space.

I wouldn't recommend doing it at high speeds though. It's mainly used when pulling the slow moving a-hole at the end of merge lanes, or when a road merges from two lanes to one

The only place in the world where the left lane is for passing and you shouldn't pass on the right on highways, is in dispute is in Alberta. It's dangerous and stupid, especially in three lane situations where you have cars weaving in and out and coming at you from all directions.

Ok, I'm going to ask one of the left lane slow traffic people this question. The other day I was driving down a road with no lights, and clearly 4 lane. Two cars had the two pole positions, and were sticking right around 57 in a 60 zone. Finally one car realized he needed to turn and hit the brakes to get behind the left lane slow guy.

I took that opportunity to pass on the right, getting past everybody. Now the left lane slow poke is following me at 80, and then when we get onto an 80 zone he is following me at 110. (I don't always go that fast, but instinctively I speed up when somebody is behind me.)

My question is, why does somebody do that? Do they have no ability to drive on their own and must follow a pack or something? I just don't get it.

i think those people are very afraid of tickets so they follow the speed limit but when someone speeds along in front of them they figure its safe to follow because they wont be the ones getting a ticket you will. I have heard this mentality before yet I've seen cops pull over two vehicles at the same time for just that.

I've had that happen also, especially trying to follow to close after the pass. My guess is it drunks looking to race or other trouble.

they debunked that argument in the article

Everyone pulled over during Leary's patrol said they thought it wasn't a problem as long as they were going the speed limit. But the law says otherwise.

"It is a traffic infraction to drive continuously in the left lane of a multilane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic," the statute reads.
so if this law comes to Alberta (and i really hope it does) if you decide to do 100km/h on the dot in the left lane you'll get a ticket. that's awesome

Blocker, if theres a speed trap ahead guess who is getting the ticket. I have employed this strategy from time to time, of course you won't often find me doing 57 in a 60 either though.

And that's just it. If you are a speedy type you are going to be doing a few km over the limit anyways in a 60 zone.

And it seems to be older people; like people in their 50s or something.
