Default What's my best option? Internet on the Road

I storm chase quite a bit and lately I've been finding it would be awfully nice to have internet on the road to look up radar and what not.

I honestly don't know too much about the options for data, so a little help is needed. With the recent drops in data rates, I figured now is a good time to get into it.

First of all, I'm 14 months into a 3 year contract with Rogers, so I will either have to do an expensive hardware upgrade with what phones they have or purchase an unlocked phone. Having said that, I would also like to tether the phone. Looking at radar and weather maps on a small cell screen won't cut it (would have been sufficient on the iphone though). So what phones allow tethering and what rogers plans allow it as well? A Blackberry with 300mb data concerns me and weather data can be very large.

Question about 3G... is it active throughout the entire rogers network or is it mainly in largely populated city centers?

My company has found the Mobile Internet Card to work pretty well, although I don't know the ins-and-outs of a personal plans.

Forgot to mention, I'd like it to take place of my current phone as well. I'd rather not have a card. Spoke to a few Rogers reps who were absolutely clueless. They couldn't even answer anything regarding tethering! And this was on their own products.

Teathering works well with the blackberry, and there are conflicting reports of the 6gb for 30.00 a month available for the blackberys. I don't know if its an option but you should have a harware upgrade available, and when the blackberry bold comes in a few weeks you will likely have access to the 6gb for 30.00 so data shouldn't be an issue.

As for coverage, being a rogers customer may get sketchy as you chase storms to various areas.

IMO your best bet is to make sure the 300/30 is active on your plan and then budget your data as best you can..

I've used the teathering across most of the country with rogers, it works in most places along major highways short of Northern Ontairo, forget about that place..
