Awesome. I Great Britain it is illegal to undertake someone (pass on the passenger side) so people GTFO of the fast lane if there is someone behind them wanting to pass.

in Utah, it's illegal for semis to be in the left lane at any time. Anyone hauling a trailer gets pulled over as well (as my Dad found out. At least they were kind enough to just give him a warning). I like both of these laws.

It is like that everywhere I have been in the US. At least on interstates.
It is very frustrating to roll up to lights and for there to be a big truck in each of the lanes. That happened to me the other day at the lights on Crowchild heading North at 24th ave. There was a dumptruck with a trailer in all 3 lanes.

On a related topic, has anyone noticed that deerfoot has been brutal lately? Even more so then usual.....
Yesterday I was driving to my jam space, and I literally had to weave from the left to middle to the right and back again 10 times on the way over, just to fgo 105km/hr. Maybe it was all the out of towners heading back out of town or something, but it was the most frustrating drive.

I find stampede week a terrible week to drive outside of rush hour and I find rush hour to be MUCH lighter than it normally is.

Interesting, I wonder if, according to this new law, people could get a ticket even if they were going well in excess of the speed limit but stayed in the left lane when there was no need to (IE - no one for a significant distance in front of them in the right lane) ... they could end up with a speeding ticket and an 'impeding' ticket.
Would they only be super-worried about it if you are in the left lane and there is someone behind you waiting to get past you? Seems like a strange law, open to a lot of potential issues with uneven enforcement. I mean, how do they determine when this law has been broken?

When you are in the left lane and not passing someone if I read the story correctly.

So any time someone is in the left lane? Even in a situation where they are not impeding traffic? I thought the point of the law was to prevent that from happening, what would be the point if it was 3AM and there were 4 cars in a 1 km stretch of road?

In other news, the roads just became more crowded because the effective capacity has been cut in half on a two lane road. I think it's a little on absurd side. Roads are becoming heavily overburdened with traffic over it's intended capacities, but now we want all traffic to stay in one lane, squeezing that traffic down further.
This is only a short term fix done by a politician.
Here's something... What if the cars in the right lane are going 100km/hr. A car in the left lane is going 110km/hr, but he is holding up cars behind him that were going 120 km/hr. Can he get a ticket still? It says you can only be in the left lane if passing and can't impede traffic.... but he's doing both.

Well then you likely wouldn't get a ticket. It's like me getting pulled over for speeding on the way to golf two weeks ago. I had grabbed a few random single beers out of my fridge and thrown them in my front seat to put in my golf bag when I got to the course. The cop saw them all laying there, and could have given me a ticket for open liquer. But he didn't give me the ticket mostly because he knew I hadn't been drinking, and it was 11am. So all laws are subject to not being enforced if the cop feels it isn't worthy of a ticket. Just as a cop liely won't pull someone over at 3 in the morning for driving in the left lane, if the streets are bare.

BY the definition of that law, he would be able to pass the guy going 110, but would have to move out of the left lane immediatly after, regardless of whether someone is in the left lane behind him or not, therefore the guys going 120km/hr could then pass him. It's a pretty sound law actually.

then the guy going 110 will pass the 100 guys, pull back into the right lane and let the guy going 120 pass. this is the way it should always work, if everyone could follow a few simple rules of the road everyone would get there a lot faster.

Exactly, swallow your pride and let fast people go fast, and you can go slow in the right lane all you want.

I didn't really get a chance to participate in the last driving thread, so now it's MY time to shine! I got 4x4 and redvans back today. (I owe Redvan one from when I gleefully explained how I got rid of my crappy minivan, lol)

I just don't think that a law like this is the answer, it seems difficult to enforce and open to a lot of challenges. I suppose this could be used as a tool to educate people to be more attentive on the road (to get out of the way of people you are impeding) or to educate people about the more 'off the books' unwritten rules of driving, but you'd hope that a campaign about this new law would be included with it. The guy they quoted within the article actually was thinking he wasn't doing anything wrong - which just goes to show you that a lot of people don't know those unwritten rules of the road and that not all people who are driving 'too slow' in the fast lane are doing it to spite others.

its not an unwritten rule, every highway I have seen has a sign that says Slower Traffic Keep Right, which means if you are going slower get in the right lane (read: get the f' out of my way)
