Just went out for a drink and noticed my local rogers video has a line up waiting for (I am assuming tomorrows) launch. Me and the lady had a good laugh about it.
The guy at the front was the typical pizza faced electronics enthusiast (sorry if I offended anyone here).

I'm about as big a nerd as you'll find, and even I laugh at the people who line up for a computer device/game/movie.
Besides, the people who do line up know they are being ridiculous and love the attention they receive for it. Well, that and the funky new device they just bought.
I'll be waiting a week or two till things die down and I can enter a store without having to deal with "the smell".

I'm not laughing at them one bit. I believe there's going to be a longer wait after this first release because of the lack of supply. 10-15 units per store and who knows over the phone is barely going to be sufficient. I think it's going to be like the Wii all over again. There actually might be more demand for it in a couple weeks than today.

Exactly ... once those people start using them in public settings I can see a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon. Much like the wii, the iphone has that "oh wow, I'm going to buy this" appeal about 2 minutes into using it. Just my opinion of course.

Do you think there will be a problem with people buying them and selling them for a profit?

People said the same thing about the first gen iPhone. The demand was easily matched by supply.
Look at it this way... How many people do you know that can actually afford a smart phone like the iPhone? Of those, who already have Blackberries or an equivalent on a multi-year contract?
Unless these people are able to buy out their contracts just to get a flashy phone, I just don't see how the demand is going to be as massive as it was for the Wii.
Time will tell, but precedent has shown that Apple can match the demand relatively quickly.

That's why I'm switching to Fido.
Anyone see the global piece this morning? People have been waiting since 9:00pm last night; insane.

That wasn't in a small market such as Canada. That was the USA. Big difference.

People are always willing to pay. Hardware upgrades will be used extensively I'm sure. If already on a multi-year contract, you can still get the iPhone with a renewal of the contract.

Didn't say it was going to be the same demand as the Wii... just the same scenario. Apple certainly can match demand... but will they even offer to do so in Canada? That's the part that remains to be seen.

I doubt it. With the requirement that you have to return the phone to a store if you cancel within 30 days, plus the having to unbrick it again after changing a SIM, it'll take a while for the supply to hit the market.
In addition to this, it will have to wait until after the unlock hack is available, if there is going to be one.

Well at least the 2.0 software / firmware.
Not sure if this works on the 3G.

From the sounds of this story, no one is getting an iPhone 3G and activating it today:

We've heard many accounts now from varying Apple store and AT&T locations that employees are having problems while trying to activate phones through iTunes.

Yeah, I heard that activation is completely broken and all the Apple servers are down.
Way to go, Apple.
Maybe now they'll go back to in-home activation after this mess.
Edit: Also, if you have an original iPhone with the v1.x software, don't upgrade it to version 2.0 right now. It will leave it as a brick since the phone needs to contact iTunes in order to complete activation. Once the servers come up again it should be fine, but until then hold off.

Pfft.. iTunes? If you're in Canada with a first gen phone you don't even think about activating through iTunes.

I phoned for my HUP last week, almost got a krzr or something, for $39. I complained that I was scared off the iphone because of the rapery that was the rumoured rogers rates at the time. She told me they would be getting trained (on the iphone) the following week and politely recommended that I wait for all the details. She also thought that $100 for 6 GB was going to be one of the plans, go figure.
well I did, and think I made out ok.
8GB iPhone............................................ ................$249
Fifty sheckle 'retain your old, better cheap plan' fee.........50
$30/ mth 6 GB data add-on..........................................30/mth
+
free rogers to rogers
250 mins
unlimited incoming
call display
call waiting
evenings @ 6
"customer relations plan"
.................................................. .............................47/mth
Means I'm paying just under 80 bones a month for the new phone. I think it's a pretty fair deal, as my buddy down in Denver paid 6 or 700 bucks for his iphone and as previously mentioned, ATT caps the unlimited at 5GB...for just around a $100/mth.
Oh, and it should be here in 3-5 business days, and I can "un-brick" it when I plug it into my I-tunes equipped 'puter.

So fellow first gen iPhone users, are you going to upgrade and unlock the new 2.0 firmware? Is there any advantage to it?

I saw some screen captures and it looks pretty nice. Not sure what the advantages are though.
I'm still trying to find out as a rogers existing customer that has a first gen Iphone if we are eligible to get the 30/month 6gb plan on our phones and if we can, if we have to do a three year contract to get it. any idea?

HoFo people are adding it to every phone (Nokia, Blackberry, HTC, iPhone, etc). It does require a 3 year data contract...

I just visited 3 Rogers mall sites (not for this reason .. I was just out shopping) and all three sites told me that you can only get this 6G/$30 on the iPhone. If what you say is true, Rogers have a lot of uninformed sales people. Though I had gathered that already....
