Thumbs down Thought Koodo was a no-brainer? I smell Telus.

It's no secret I work in the electronics industry, and I thought I would share this with you.

Koodo looked like the savior of cell phone plans to me, because they had cheap plans with no "fatty" extras. Well... it didn't take long for them to get greedy, and start wanting more. The problem is, how do you charge more for the same services... where do you add value, when the whole motif is that there are no stupid extras?

Just like big brother Telus, Koodo wants more of your money for texts.

These are the changes:

Before July 08:

Unlimited Text Messaging

$5 per month

The Unlimited Text Messaging side lets you send and receive text messages to virtually any digital wireless phone in Canada, the U.S. and 90 other countries.

After July 08:

Unlimited Messaging (Text and Picture)
$10 per month

Keep your fingers flexed. The Unlimited Messaging side lets you send and receive text and picture messages to virtually any digital wireless phone in Canada, the U.S. and 90 other countries.

This just pisses me off. Finally a company comes out with the brass to actually provide a new, exciting phone service whos rates are on par with US and European rates, and they decide to jack up the prices for squat value.

Here's an outstanding plan they just completely dropped too:

Five Essentials - $30.00 per month

100 Anytime Minutes
Unlimited Evenings & Weekends
Unlimited Nationwide Talk & Messaging to 5 Numbers

See for yourself.

After (updated): https://shop.koodomobile.com/plans/r...bos/index.html

Telus owns Koodo. Not sure if you knew this or not from your post because of the big brother Telus comment (do you mean big brother as in scary government style or big brother as in ownership style?)

It's true though, I'm sorry. I wanted a new alternative. But the scoop is that there really are only 3 companies right now for cell phone service (at least I believe this is true for Alberta).

A buddy of mine works in Telus. He explained to me that they introduced Koodo as a means to get Rogers customers who had lost faith in the Telus brand name.

edit:

Another rumour is that Bell is about to be purchased by Telus... but that's definitely just a rumour for now I think.

Koodo made 4X what they expected their first month. This is no surprise to me.

You smell Telus because they rent the towers from Telus (in alberta anyway)

Telus probably jacked them for being successful, they did the same for that doggy company.

Telus owns Koodo.

Not different companies.

1 company.

Completely false.

Koodo is a brand of TELUS.

The introduction of a separate, youth-targeted brand would let Telus pursue a different strategy than for its mainstream service. That approach has worked for rivals Bell Canada and Rogers Communications Inc. and their Virgin Mobile Canada and Fido brands, respectively.

Yeah... I knew Koodo was owned by Telus. That's what the "smell" and "big brother" comments were about.

Some days when I'm feeling bored I ponder the idea of starting a cell phone company, and crushing the living daylights out of Telus, Bell and Rogers.

I agree, I wonder a couple things though:

1) I honestly do not know how much a cell phone tower costs to put up and maintain, and how you would even obtain the rights to the land to do it, or the access to the infrastructure to establish a solid network.

2) What do the existing phone companies have that is blocking out competitors... ie... how does it work with providing a cell phone service?

There's probably a LOT to it that nobody understands... you'd think that somebody would have tried to destroy this little oligarchy by now.

Kinda like banks.

Don't like banks? Go to a credit union. Unfortunately Edmonton seems to have much better credit unions than Calgary.

Don't like the cell phone companies? Too bad. Presumably the primary barrier to entry is the massive cost of infrastructure. On the other hand, I know a few horribly rich people. Maybe I can hypnotize them.

Man, I'm happy I got a kickass plan from Rogers by threatening to cancel and go to Koodo. Would have sucked if I had moved to Koodo and they jacked the prices.

As of now, Koodo is letting people keep their plans, but if you make ANY changes at all, you will lose it and be forced to go onto their new pricing...

If you don't mind me asking, what is your plan like and how much do you pay? I'm almost up with Telus and i'm trying to see what 'goodies' I can get with my plan
