I know all the members of Out of your Mouth, I grew up with the drummer. I haven't talked to them in a couple of years though.
One thing you NEVER do is have your first hit as a cover of another song. They knew that and dreaded it from the start.
For those of you who were fans a few years ago, they used to be known as local band Flu. I heard the lead singer got an attitude and left, another band member had a kid and became a full-time father, and the other two, I believe, are in another local Calgary band called Autobody.
You know, minus their Madonna cover, they actually had a hell of a CD. Quite an underrated band when they wrote their own material.

ROFL, funny story about that. A band I used to play in opened up for the crappy rock band that they formed when the Moffats broke up.

There are a few good bands in town here, and some really good venues if you look for them. I was at the Distillery a few weeks back and saw some band that was all painted up with white faces and clothes, and after I got used to the fact that they sounded nothing like Devo, I actually started to enjoy their music. I wish I knew who they were, because they were quite good.
Distillery puts on some really good gigs from time to time; I'd recommend people into the indy scene check it out. Beware of the death metal that makes itself through there every once in a while though....

I'm pretty sure we have an HMV in most of the malls in calgary, so it means it's pretty good, and future shop sells lots of cds too. And Cowboys and Ranchmans plays some good music on the weekends, lots of popular stuff that everyone likes, so I think the music scene is pretty bumpin'.

I think Monty's Travelling Reptile Show used to film in Calgary. You might have a potential customer in that guy.
Really though, I don't have a clue if there is any market for exotic pets in Calgary or not. It could be huge, it might not exist. I'm sure most people on this board don't know either. Everybody on here seems to have a dog.
Google could be a better bet than CP in gauging a market for your creatures.

Please forgive me bumping a thread from page two, but as someone who has made the move to Calgary I thought I could help.
Rent: Not as bad as people tend to say it is. I'm moving back to Calgary Aug 30 and the place I found to rent is cheaper then what I am paying here in Halifax. Also, if you're coming from Toronto I can't see things being that much more expensive. If you're planning on actually buying a home, I think that is where you see the real "sky-high" costs.
Food: You will pay more for "fresh" produce and boxed/canned imports but save on beef and milk.
Music: I'm not too sure on the life of a musician out there, but there are some good venues to play in. The Underground had some good shows when I was there. Also there is a small(ish) club next to The Rhino (6th ave? DT) that I can't remember the name of but always had excellent bands performing. My perception was that the heavier your music, the more fans you'd get, but that doesn't mean there is no audience for anything else.
Exotic Pets: Well think about the demographic out there. Younger people with a lot of disposable income. I would think, if marketed well, you could have a lot of success. If this thread is any indication, you'd also have very little competition.

SUS- it's Broken City and it is brilliant.
Seconding Josh. Come. Make your own scene if you have to. That's what Calgary is about and it's why it's a great city. Nobody told the founders of Sled Island what they could or could not do. They grasped this city's meritocratic, entrepreneurial spirit and made it happen. That's how the oil patch works and that's how the arts scene works.
Come to Calgary. Make music here.

Great, another guy moving to Calgary, this city is becoming a regular sausagefest. We need to ban male immigration and encourage female immigration, especially from Montreals hot chick stripper district.
Vote for me.

Stay in St.Thomas? Where they killed Jumbo? And then erected a statue to commemorate the act! A cold, cold place that St. Thomas it.

I would have to rent a house, I obviously cannot house all these critters in an apartment, is their a lot of houses for rent out there? Is the quality of living as expensive as I heard? Any feedback is welcomed.

As far as reptiles go, there are numerous pet stores that could buy them off of you, and a number of reprtile shows going on in Calgary and area (red deer comes to town). I know of a person who can sell up to 60/day on a good day at a show
