You don't need an unlimited text plan, you just need a text plan, which start at $3/month.

I have had a cell phone for about 12 years and worked in the industry for about 4 years and I have never had or heard one of my friend talk about a spam text they got.

Do these things happen a lot that I don't hear of? (not being a d**k, its a serious question)

The only texts that I hear about are those jokes/horoscopes of the day ones, which are coming from a service you would have had to sign up with yourself.

I'll get one if there is a reasonably cheap way to get it without a contract. I simply refuse to sign up for 3 years of Rogers "service" just for a phone that will undoubtably have at least one major revamp in that time.

A bit more research on it and it seems that it will work like the current iPhone; changing the SIM to a non-Rogers/Fido SIM will brick the phone and it will have to be re-activated via iTunes, and Apple will have a list of IEMI numbers for each carrier.

This keeps the phone locked to the carrier, which I guess is no different than all the other phones.

I'm still not sure, but I will likely go to the store early and try and get one and play with it and then decide. Apparently the 15 days / 30 minutes return thing won't apply for the iPhone, HF says that it will be 15 days period no matter how many minutes.

I'm an existing customer on Fido, and I'll stay with Fido, and probably keep my current plan. My work pays for my data plan so I'll keep the $30/300 plan I have now.

Yeah spam SMSs are pretty much nonexistent, but that's not really the point. Just because they don't exist now doesn't mean they won't in the future, and as others have pointed out it's possible to intentionally spam someone and screw up their bill. Being charged for something that I may not want without having any choice to refuse it doesn't seem right.

They'll be out there without a contract, but they'll be expensive.

I look at it this way.. I've been on Fido for a long time now, I doubt I'll move anytime soon. I can still change my plan during the 3 year contract. Basically they're giving me $400 to sign up for 3 years (price difference between an iPhone on a contract and an iPhone not on a contract), at some point I might as well take advantage of it. I switch phones enough that I don't think I'd want to be on Bell or Telus.

FWIW, I saw a Telus rep on the news last night say 'Clients will not be charged for spam texts'. Not sure how they decide what is spam and what isn't...

Is there any advantage to going with Fido over Rogers for a brand new customer? The plans look identical and I thought you had to spend a fee to use the larger Roger's network.

Yeah, I mistyped last night, I meant a regular ol' text plan - not necessarily unlimited. Right now I don't have any kind of text applied to my plan.

I don't get too many, actually the only ones I get are from Telus, advertising some deal or discount. However I do get two texts from Telus on my birthday every year (one message split into two) saying that my minutes are unlimited for that day. Ironically enough, with the new text levy in place that means that instead of getting charged nothing on my birthday (since I never exceed my minutes) I'll now be getting charged $.30. Thanks for the present Telus - you shouldn't have.

Nope, it's just that there's now the potential to cost someone a heck of a lot of money through incoming SMS if a person is properly motivated and the recipient has no text plan in place. Just a 'what if' scenario.

I very much doubt any company can get away with this, so fear mongering over this situation is a waste of time. Any message sent by Bell or Telus will not cost you anything. If I'm wrong, I will be truely surprised.

That said, there is still no good reason for any mobility company to charge a receiver. If they need to, RAISE THE COST TO SEND!

These two companies fail at PR.

Don't know if this has been posted, but Roger's caved.

$30 a month for 6GB plan now. Only for a limited time.

New iPhone Data Plan!

$30 / 6 gig
http://micro.newswire.ca/release.cgi...5804-0&Start=0
- can be added to any 'in-market voice plan' (whatever that means)
- must sign up for the iPhone before August 31
- rumored to be available for any Rogers 3G phone
- They actually did live trials for this, and probably realized their previous data plans were crap (ie: what everyone was telling them).

More news/clarifications to come around noon hopefully....

(Rogers bending to public opinion? Will wonders never cease)

Once again if you get a text message from your mobile provider you will NOT be charged.

I have also heard that both Telus/Bell are working(or have completed, not 100%) together to try and implement a system where you can block certain #'s from texting you.

This means if you have one of those old plans that doesn't exsist anymore, usually the good ones, then you will have to change your plan to a current plan offered by Rogers.

I hope they release a $60 unlimited plan. But it looks like this is not just for the iPhone, it is for all BB's and smart phones.

It's only for 3G phones. ie: the new iPhone and the new Blackberry Bold (these are the only two I know of that are coming to Rogers within the 2 month window).

Edit: And 6GB is more than any other plan that I know of. Even AT&T's "unlimited" plan in the States has a 5GB cap in the fine print.

In addition to these, there are currently 4 phones on Rogers with the 3G capability (sort the available phones by "High Speed Mobile Internet"):

- LG TU915 VU
- Nokia N95
- Samsung A736
- Samsung A746

Advantages of Fido is per-second billing, earlier evenings for free evenings and weekends..

Disadvantage, as you say is pay a fee to access the Rogers network, which may or may not be necessary. Fido also doesn't offer a My5 type thing.
