Question Job Search sites / agencies

I am stepping up my search for a better job and want to leave no stone unturned.

I have hit workopolis / Monsters / Calgaryjobshops etc...

What are some other good websites to check out?

Anyone have experience with placement agencies?

I am typically looking for Communications / Public Relations / Supervisory type positions.

Thanks for the insight in advance.

I really think placements are an absolute last resort. Our office hired a temp from one of the placement companies and it's really difficult to deal with. They charge relatively high rates and typically keep about 40%. As a result, you underpay an employee, who ultimately isn't happy, or you over pay for the service you actually receive.

Agreed. The agencies are generally looking out for their own commissions. I know a couple of people that have had a good match through them, but mostly not. I've tried a few in the past with very weak results.

Best way to look for a job, which I am currently doing, is network, network, network. Tell your friends, friends of friends, relatives, neighbours, anyone...and then see if you can play six degrees of separation to see who knows someone at a company or industry you'd like to work in. Set up some information interviews with those contacts and go from there. Keep looking on Monster, workopolis, etc...but it shouldn't be your main avenue of job searching, as something like 90% of jobs never even get advertised.

BTW, I recently finished a Project Management program, so if anyone here works somewhere that needs a project manager, drop me a private message. Don't let my location fool you, i'm actively seeking in Calgary as well.

If you haven't already, check out the websites for the Calgary chapters of both CPRS and IABC.

http://www.cprscalgary.org
http://www.iabccalgary.com

IIRC, the job postings on the CPRS site are freely available to anyone, but you need to be a member of IABC to browse their job listings. Additionally, the national website for those organizations might have job postings that aren't listed on the local chapters' sites.
