Honestly, A concrete pad, or landscaping pavers, or something like that. If you want something soft, your options are probobly grass or Feildturf, but fieldturf is probobly outrageously expensive.

How about the recycled tires that are ground up and formed to make a nice rubbery (slightly bouncy) surface. They have them in several newer parks here in Lethbridge. I assume you could get it done for your backyard but it might be expensive. Plus you are saving the world by using recycled materials.

^ Old tires are cheap. Scissors are cheap. Sounds like a pretty decent way to spend some time with the kids as well as teach them the value of hard work.
