Everyone has the freedom of rating a thread. Maybe the mods can work with that a bit.
Maybe if someone created a thread or significantly contributed to a 5 star thread it should warrant a red square (skillz). It's like the Lester B. Pearson Trophy... voted by your peers.

What about a system like CBC has where people can recommend the post to be placed on tv, but in this case, recommend the post for skill. The number of recommendations is viewable to all but it would still be up to the skill givers to decide if it is worth it or not.
I think it comes down to basic apathy just as we see in the election process. People want to get involved and voice there points and recommendations yet they won't take the time to actually get involved by sending a pm to recommend a post. If they could simply hit the recommend button by the post, I think that would get more people involved.
One other thing. I think there should be a time limit on the negative skill. I received a negative skill for a 1 word post almost 1 1/2 years ago.
Thoughts?

^^^use the 'report post' button to report a post for skill.
Although I think a 'reputation' button would work better, and would probably get more people involved.

I think its a system that the vast majority don't use and a great number of people aren't sure exactly how to use it or how it works.
My website forums had a system for rating threads and one for rating people, we eventually removed the thread rating as rarely did people use it and it was often used by negative people who wanted to simply be asses.
Having said that I don't think its abused here, nor do I think its a big deal either way since CP is so cool anyhow.

I thought of that but two things.
1: At the bottom of the report post it says - Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts
2: Other people can't see if it has been reported or not.

Heh.
I don't think Photon noticed that, or he would have changed it.

I've mentioned it before when giving cred for good posts. I'm not sure that the mods are too concerned as most posters seem to know that it can be for good or bad posts.
EDIT: here was Photon's response:

As long as it makes some people think before they post something inflammatory then there is some success.

There are people with more skilzz than me....clearly the system is egregiously flawed.

I got negative points one day when someone was in a bad mood and didn't like my mild sarcasm. I wish there was some kind of an appeals process.

You can PM the mods about it. I don't know what happens with it, but that is what they always suggest when someone has issues with, or questions about, their skill.

Being sarcastic...that's a blue square
Complaining about your blue squares...that's a blue square
Asking for an appeals process...that's a blue square
Looking at my sandals...that's a blue square
Paddling the school canoe...that's definitely a blue square
