Yup, you pay more for less.
The monthly charge is actually less than the US monthly charge.
But you aren't locked in for 3 years with AT&T.

"sure you get less"... care to minimize that any more? That's the point!

Ignoring data (differences are obvious), compare the voice plans:
AT&T - 450 daytime minutes
Rogers - 150 daytime minutes

AT&T - 5000 eve/wknd minutes
Rogers - unlimited eve/wknd minutes STARTING AT 9 PM!!!!

Even if it was only a 2 year deal for Rogers at the same cost, what you'd get for that cost is pitiful.

The three things I would like Roger's to change:

- improve the voice plan. Those are just brutal.
- increase the data caps to 1GB min for the 60$ plan.
- drop the 3 year required plan and allow for a 1 or 2 year option.

If they do the above three things, I'll buy an iPhone. Until then, I can resist the urge.

Come on Roger's... you have a valuable opportunity to establish your company as Canada's premier wireless provider. Chances are this opportunity will be gone in less then a year and you'll get creamed by Bell/Telus. Wake the ef up.

To add to the griping...75 text messages is not enough. Ever since I got my iPhone, my text messaging has gone through the roof. It's so easy to sent them and type them out that I would burn through 75 easily in a month.

Agreed on all points, although I think I'll still pick one up. The way I think of it is that if every carrier in Canada is locking people into a 3 year term, it's going to be with a phone I will be able to live with for 3 years....And right now the iPhone 3G is the only one I would take. SO many garbage phones out there...Especially the phone OS's.

Precisely. Windows Mobile is a big pile of dung. The Blackberry OS is ok, but I need something that talks Mac. Currently the only phone that can sync to OSX without expensive 3rd party software is the iPhone.

Damnit Roger's... making all mad.

Look, I agree that Rogers plans are absolutely shameful. I'm just saying that that chart saying that the overall cost of owning an iPhone is double in Canada compared to the UK is misleading in that the UK contract is only 18 months while the Rogers plan is 3 years.

What we should be comparing is apples to apples. I think if we took Rogers most expensive plan and compared it per year (or extrapolate the UK/US contracts to 3 years). I think it would be a more convincing comparison and just as embarrassing to Rogers.

Very true, another good point. I looked at my text message last month, and I did around 150 text messages (This is sent sms' from me!). I honestly didn't think I sent that many.

wow.. I would go through 75 sent txt's in about 2 days. Yesterday, I did about 100.

There seems to be a few updates on the ruinediphoneblog.

I disagree to a point. Rogers is requiring a 3 year contract where the others aren't. After 18 months in the UK, you can go to a different provider without a problem. Can't do that same thing with Rogers.

To illustrate this in the Canadian scope, let's say that Telus got a new phone in 15 months which makes the 3G iPhone look like a bag phone. If Rogers only required a 18 month contract, you'd either miss out on this new phone for 3 months, or could pay a small amount to 'buy out' of the last 3 months of your contract. Instead, you have to pay a much higher amount, or wait a lot longer.

The fact that Rogers has their total cost about right (found by doubling the UK plan, or adding another 1/3 onto the US plan) means very little. Presenting it in the chart above just further illustrates the lack of features and the length of time that you're forced to endure it.

I believe Symbian S60 can sync with macs without expensive 3rd party software.

Pretty pathetic they need to hide this from their customers.

Quick question

How much does 1MB give you? How many e-mails/HTML websites etc...

1mb? Probably 2-5 semi-graphical webpages, and a decent number of email (if they dont have attachments)
