hye sorry i missed your last question.
the dealer only gets the what the customer qualifies for.
tough call on which gets the better resale. everything is piss poor these days.. but both of those cars should be half decent.

Based on the last few years, I would say the MINI, but by a hair. Still in hot demand, prices are pretty stable. Mine is nearing 3 years old, I paid 36k and my model/year is currently selling on the used market for nearly 30k. However, the Civic is always popular due to its good price point and fuel economy.

My mom is shopping for a newer vehicle these days too. Unlike most 61 year old women in the market for vehicles...she wants something with decent power thats a nice driving car and fuel economy be sort of damned...today's car is much better on gas than what she's driven for most of her life. Currently she's driving a 1995 E320, but like any car that old, the repair bills are starting to show up and she doesn't really want that hastle.
She did look at a new Benz C class with the 3 litre engine. Said that it was around 40k at the dealership. Are these new C class Benz's any good? Won't be as nice as an E class, but it's 13 years newer. She looked at other cars from the Japanese mid size class, but she always claims...they're not Benz's when I ask her about them.

I am biased for sure but the new C-Class is an awesome car. Quality has been top notch so far and it is getting great reviews. I have been driving one for 6-months now and love it.

How does salesman commission work?
I went to a dealership, and test drove a car. The salesman was not someone I'd like to deal with on an actual sale. If I go in 2 months later and find a different guy, is the new guy going to have to split his commission with the original salesman? (and thus be less motivated to close my sale?) Does length of time between my two visits matter?

Long story short here.
I put a deposit down at a Saturn dealership for them to locate a 2007 Mazda 3 for me, because the one I was going to look at sold a couple of hours before I got there.
I gave them all the specs that I wanted (most of them being on the original vehicle), for the same price as the original vehicle, and they said they would locate the vehicle for me, pending a $500 deposit.
So I gave them the deposit (I know, I know, not the smartest) and went in yesterday to take a look at the car.
It was the color I wanted (I asked for a dark exterior) but I SPECIFICALLY asked for a dark interior (being wary of stains), but the car has a beige interior. Not only is it beige, but there are already many stains inside the car, something the dealership said they would take care of. Anyway, they acted all surprised that I wanted a dark interior when we had already agreed to this in writing.
Also, the car doesn't have cruise control on it (the original vehicle had been advertised as having cruise control, which is why I negotiated it into the price), and the back two tires are more worn than the front two (little tread depth left) AND are different tires. So, I asked the dealership to put in the cruise control and new back tires in for me, at THEIR cost.
So, basically right now they aren't budging on either but they gave me the whole "we'll call you on Monday" thing.
I haven't signed any car contract. The only thing that I signed was something "pending customer approval" and of course I gave over the deposit.
Do you think I should be able to ask for my deposit back?

Hi Tim,
I just started doing some research for a new Minivan for the ever expanding family. Looking right now at the Grand Caravans with Stow and Go.
What kind of price range should I be looking at? From what I can tell, the stow and go feature started in 2005.
Also, what are some of the pros and cons of buying privately versus buying through a dealership (all biases aside )?
Thanks!

I really don't know all that much about minivans.. But the ones i have seen are going pretty cheap.. You might also look at a new one.. They are practically giving the things away.. It might actually be cheaper on a 3 year lease for a new one than buying a used one.

I've got some good options and go-fast bits, but the Canadian pricing differential is the biggest culprit. I priced my build out on the US site, and when allowing for all the the things that are included as standard in Canada, it came out to a hair under 30K.
I know guys that have bought a loaded Shelby Mustang for 75K (all inclusive, including taxes) out of the US, when the local Ford dealer has them sitting on the lot for 96K...

LARF. They don't want to give me the deposit back, as the manager says the sales dude claims (absolute lie) he told me all the stuff about the car before he took the money from me. They're saying that they bought the car for me and now they're carrying a vehicle they don't need.
So, I'm driving to the dealership tomorrow to have it out with them. Maybe threats of contacting the BBB will pry the truth out of those scum.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to go to one of the Mazda dealerships instead? Look at their certified used inventory? I'm sure they'll have at least something exact or close to your specs.

They will give it back.. Keep the pressure on them... If the contract said subject to customer approval and you don't approve of the car then they don't have a leg to stand on.. Did you agree to a price or anything before they brought the car in?

Yes, yes it would have. The problem is that the price they (the Saturn dealership) was offering me was a few thousand less than anything Mazda had.

Thank you. I did keep the pressure on and they did eventually give me my deposit back and also offered me a 2007 silver Mazda 3 GX at $14,900 (originally advertised at $16,453). I'm gonna sleep on it

Used Outlander
Hey Tim,
Thanks for all the information you have provided in this thread.
I'm looking at maybe purchasing a used 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander and the dealer has the vehicle listed at $26,988 but has offered to sell it to me for $24,500 + GST, and is waiving all other fees. The SUV has about 31,000 kilometres on it. Does this sound like a reasonable price for this vehicle?
Thanks
