iPhones bought at the apple stores in the states don't require a contract. They do however require an unlocking/jailbreaking etc. That's what I did with mine.

Stupid Rogers...guess I'm sticking with my RAZR. I didn't need an iPhone anyway.

That was version 1. Version 2 will require a contract even at the Apple stores.

Can't say I'm surprised. The only plan that would suite a iphone user is their $115 plan. It's just too bad it COST $115/month.

I was planning on getting one on the 11th, but with those plans, hell no. I will wait for a bit and see what happens with the jailbrakers, iPhone (no plan) options are.
I am not fan of lobby groups, but is there a group in canada that is already lobbying against the cell companies in canada? There has to be a rule or something keeping companies like AT&T, T-Mobile etc out of Canada.
Telus and Bell seem to be offering really good data plans.
Does Rogers think that people are going to flock to the iPhone for $130/month?
Maybe a facebook group could be set to up protest the dataplans. Boycott the iPhone in canada until the plans are reasonable.
If there was a $60 unlimited plan from Rogers, they would sell 3x as many phones, plans etc.

Well that settles that. I just listed my first gen iphone on ebay and I'll switch back to blackberry. Sooooo much for that.

I use my non-Rogers unlocked N95 on Fido with the $30/300MB plan and it works fine, the first gen iPhone will be no different.

I'm tempted to do this too, I just don't know if I can go so long without changing phones and limit myself to whatever Telus or Bell happen to have.

That won't work anymore, all v2 iPhones will require a contract of some sort to activate and it's done in the store; i.e. you won't be able to walk out of the store with one without having a contract done (that you'd have to then cancel). This is because the carriers are paying Apple a lot more than $199/$299 for the phones.
I think I've read that Italy's laws are such that a non-contract phone will be available (for what cost who knows), and barring that people will just pick the country with the lowest contract cancellation fee to get v2 iPhones to put on eBay, but the cost of course will be a lot higher than the $199/$299.

I wonder if they'll have any flexibility, i.e. if I call retentions...

Oh, and it looks like the evenings and weekends is a bit better on Fido (7pm vs 9pm).

You should be able to, if you've been with them for a long time. I've been with them for almost 8 years, and I got a lot of add-ons for free when I called retentions. I'm thinking of adding the $30/300MB to my plan once I find the phone I want.

Is there anything out there that can simulate browsing the web on a BB?

Anyways, color me surprised that Rogers definition of "unlimited" does not match my own.

Get Apple on our side, and maybe we have a chance. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time. I can not remember one single instance where Rogers has backed down on anything because of consumer backlash. They just laugh and plow right along.

Agreed. And with the Ted Rogers friendly Conservatives at the helm, writing your MP demanding more competition isn't going to fly. I doubt the auction is going to provide a tiny fraction of the competition required to make Ted lower his prices.

OOo they put an open letter to steve jobs up on that site. It hit digg, and has over 2000 diggs.
The letter doesn't look that good. Maybe someone can help him out with the wording.

If they wanted to be taken seriously, they should have left the F Bomb out of the web address.

Agreed.
Here's the Bill C-555 legislation that is currently before the courts (and accompanying facebook group) which does just what you are asking.
Here's the Roger iPhone protest facebook group.
Here's the Rogers iPhone protest petition.

As I understand it, C-555 is simply about getting rid of "System Access Fees" and has nothing to do with foreign competition. Which really doesn't matter. If Rogers was not allowed to charge a "System Access Fee" they would simply raise rates to make up that money.
There are only two ways Ted is going lower prices:
(1) Strong government regulation to control the monopoly on GSM cell phone service
or
(2) Competition in GSM cell phone service
The only party recommending #1 is the NDP. And what I'm hearing about the spectrum auction is that some of the buyers plan on selling their licenses to Rogers as soon as the auction is over. So #2 doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.
