That is disgusting.
F U Rogers.
Why does canada suck so bad when it comes to cell phones and data plans? Seriously. Everywhere else in the world they do not have to deal with this gouging...

I have six months left in my Bell contract, but they called me up the other day and were trying to re-sign me immediately with a $30/month unlimited data contract. So the competition is trying to prevent loss to Rogers.
I figure I'll wait a bit longer - I am hoping for more (better?) offerings in the autumn with back to school season, or Christmas.
What I'd really like is the Palm Centro to be offered in Canada.

Look at the data overages too...come August 11-20 you'll be seeing all sort of sob stories about people with $2K Iphone bills.

I expected Apple to hold the iphone ransom for a decent data plan. I'm a little shocked Apple even agreed to release the iphone here with such brutal rates.

I was hoping for the same, but it appears that Apple is far more interested in selling as many iPhones as possible rather then ensuring their users get good data rates across the board. I can't really blame them, but my ire now extends to Steve Jobs.

As an aside... the $30/300mb works perfectly on the first generation iPhone I just picked up for $250.
$15 voice plan (200 daytime mins, unlimted evenings/weekends @ 6pm, unlimited incoming)
$30 data plan (300mb)
$12 addons pack (voicemail, name/number display, SMS, etc)
$7 system access fee
5% GST
= $67.20/month

It might be worth it to buy the phone in the states, and just get a plan that works for you on rogers.

Fido just posted their plans, and they seem to be identical to Rogers except for the per second billing aspect.
http://www.fido.ca/portal/promos/per.../promotion.jsp
This is ridiculous. They could have had both my wife and I for $75/month for three years. Now they get nothing.

Personally.. I will never ever ever ever buy a phone from a service provider again as long as I can get another one unlocked.

Why not do the same thing I did when I bought the first generation? Buy it from an Apple Store and unlock it.
They'll have unlocking abilities for 2.0 pretty quick after it's released.

But I thought that you can't walk out of the store with a 2.0 iPhone without hooking up a plan. Is that still the case? Because if it isn't, bring on the revolution!

He meant buy a 1st gen phone from the states and unlock it. 2.0 firmware update will be released on the 11th for the 1st gen phones, and the unlocking/jailbreaking stuffs will be out shortly afterwards.

why couldn't you do it with a 2nd gen iPhone?
Just because rogers is selling the phone with an insanely expensive plan, doesn't mean you have to use their plan. Just buy a 2nd gen iPhone, unlock it, use it on rogers network, and just get a plan that works for you.
Basically the same thing as with the 1st gen.

Pretty sure it does mean you have to use their plan.
They apparently will only activate it in stores.

At least until the latest version of jailbreak comes available.

Well sort of. I mean, I don't think you'll be able to purchase them from anywhere but the Rogers/Fido stores in Canada (where they'll make you agree to a plan and activate it on the spot)
I'm sure you'll be able to find some smuggled ones on Ebay though...

Yikes, well that settles it.
I'll be getting the cheapest keyboard texting phone out there and buying an iPod Touch instead.

So you now have a jailbroken iPhone and two contracts. How's that cheaper?

See rogers is stupid here. They could have released a decently priced plan and crushed telus and bell. Instead they're greed and release something that will turn many off the iphone

what 2 contracts?
Only one contract. Just get the phone on it's own, no contract.
