For me, the main factor is per-second billing. I read somewhere a while back that with per-second compared to per-minute, you're saving about 35-40% in total minutes. The other thing is CSR. Each person I've ever had to talk to have been informative, never feeding any BS. My dad has been with Rogers for over 15 years and he hates them. He's only staying because he has a very good plan.

Per second billing is probably the only advantage.
Fido used to charge $5 / month to access Rogers' network as well (to get coverage out of the major cities), but I don't know if they still do that.

thanks for the heads up. I might try and get on a list just in case the data plan turns out the way I'm hoping. If it's not what I'm looking for, then I'm sure they will have no problem selling it.

Voice and data plans announced, and they suck. The cheapest plan is 60 dollars for 150 minutes unlimited evenings and weekends (after 9pm) with 400MB data, and it doesn't even include caller ID. I think I'm going to pass on the iphone with those kind of plans.

*sigh*
So much for progress ...
I really hope people stay away in droves now in order to sent a message to these jerks. That, or have an American (or better yet, British) carrier buy up one of the mobile phone companies here and start some real competition in this country. It's sickening the way things are run now.

So a plan with 150 minutes(not enough), unlimited evenings and weekends, caller ID, and 400MB data (probably not enough) will cost you over 80 bucks. Also it's a 3 year contract and you still need to pay 200 bucks for the phone. Is the GPS going to cost extra?

Hard to say, it's AGPS but that could mean a network is totally required, or it could just mean that the time to first locate is reduced by being on the network (which means it will work even if you have the radio turned off, just take a while to get the first locate).
I do remember reading somewhere that it will work even if not connected to a network, but I'm not positive.
Wow these plans suck:
This encourages me to buy a first gen iPhone and keep my existing plan.
I guess we'll see if fido's any different.

It's called time to first fix! :P
My work plan has our low cost business plan with $65 1GB data plan attached.
Text messages are crazy though.. my last bill I used 249

So has anyone actually confirmed that the $30/300mb all-device plan works with a first gen iPhone?
I don't have time to sift through the 78000 posts that come up on HoFo when searching for "$30 plan iphone" (because of all the posts from the speculated $30 unlimited plan).
I'm hoping maybe someone here has tried it, or has already read confirmation...

Those plans do suck. I'm not sure if this has been posted (long thread) but about two months ago Telus offered me an unlimited data plan for $45/month. It includes unlimited email, web browising, text messages, and voice mail.

Looks like i'm gonna phone telus up (i'm on like the last two months of a three year contract) and tell them i'm interested in the iphone and i was wonder what device they have would be comparable and then get a good deal on both the phone and the plan.

I guess if people have their heart set on the iphone then you have no choice but to accept Rogers rip off plans. Probably Rogers intent, let the people who are going to get iphones no matter what, pay the big money. Then when interest falls off, reduce the price and offer better plans to boost sales.
I have a Blackberry Curve 8330. Which I really like so far.

Add to those prices the 'value packs':
- a $15 monthly value pack including Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes;
- a $20 monthly value pack including Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Text Messages and 6:00 p.m. Early Evening Calling and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes.
So.. 300 Minutes + 750 MB + $20 pack = $95 + $7 SAF + 911 + GST... and that doesn't even include the phone?
Good grief! That eliminates my desire to even look at the phone.

Did you really expect Rogers to do anything different? Really? They've been ripping off consumers well into the Cantel days, with crappy coverage (in Calgary/Alberta) and poor customer service to boot, why would they stop now?
Their data plans for other devices are progressive to a point, if still a tad higher then the competition, but 150mins and 400MB with caller id for $75+SAF+911+tax?
Look at the data overages too...come August 11-20 you'll be seeing all sort of sob stories about people with $2K Iphone bills.

With the new wireless auction being bid on, some major companies such as Shaw, Quebocor, and MTS will be entering the cellphone market.
I heard that early next year some of these new entrants will be carrying and selling the Iphone. I say wait till then. Hopefully Shaw will have a bundle!
