Thrashers trade St.Louis to Nashville..
To Nashville:
Martin St.Louis
JS Aubin
2010 3rd round pick
Sami Lepisto
1.25 M
To Atlanta:
Jason Pominville
Dan Ellis
It was hard trading away St Louis but we felt the return of Pominville and Ellis was well worth it. Pominville is coming off an 80 pt season with the Sabres and Ellis is the starting goalie now for the Predators after a great second half of the year and playoffs. We desperately needed a backup after trading for Khabby and feel Khabby/Ellis will give us a good combo in net.
Good luck to St.Louis in Nashville although he won't need it, and thanks to Victor for the talks.

This deal was difficult to make for us to say the least. We had no intentions of moving either of these two (as you know if you'd contacted me about them!). Basically though St. Louis was a guy we couldn't say no to!
This helps with the cap, gives us top line talent and hurts our back-up goaltending to do that...a sacrfice that we were willing to make in order to land a Hart trophy, Stanley Cup winning stud to our squad!

Hmmm....St.Louis is a quality asset, and the 1.25 in cap is good. But the rest of that is a heap of junk coming from Atlanta.
I personally prefer the package of guys going to Atlanta myself, by a fair margin. Even though both are RFA, you do get to exceed cap to match any potential RFA offers, and any team who tries to steal a RFA will be pillaged in compensation.

Wow, Nashville is busy today! Look to be moving some of that load of youth they've acquired for some win now approach. Tough deal to make but St. Louis is a proven SIM stud after last year and should instantly make the Preds a better team. Good job working that one out boys!

Ya, the Preds got the raw end of the deal here. I'd definetly have kept the younger Pomminville and Ellis as my back up. Getting Aubin...wow...a career AHL guy as opposed to a starter from '08...yikes. A case of being blinded by a big name...and trust me, I know all about that

Good job on the Preds for getting a strong SIM player. It was obviously a huge factor in this trade and we all know what strong SIM players do in this league.

I was asked by both sides for advice on this one lol. Nashville gets a sick sim player with a cheap contract which is very hard to do so when you acquire someone of that calibre (80+OV) then it is going to cost a fair amount.
I personally liked the deal from the view of ATL but nashville is making moves to win now and this certainly helps.

St. Louis is a great player to have so if you don't have a player of his calibre and want to improve your current roster than it's worth giving up almost whatever it takes. So I can't say Nashville made a bad deal.
But Atlanta did get a good return. They can really use Ellis. He's a starter in the NHL so that automatically makes him valuable. And Pominville is a nice player to have.

If Craig Andersson can win games in the play-offs and Leclaire can lead a team to the finals is Aubin really that useless? In this sim as long as they are a warm body it seems like they have a good shot to get a shutout.
I like the return for Neil but getting young guys with decent ratings are easier than getting 80+ players so I can see it from Vic's side as well.

Not really because over the course of the entire season ratings do matter, regardless of what is perceived to be strange results in the playoffs.
To be blunt - I'm tired of the whining about the sim. And that's not directed at you specifically Moon, just at everyone.
The game is the game. If the sim simply spat out a win for the best team based on ratings every time it would be pretty dull.

Unfortunately it's statements like this that get passed off as fact and allows the real truth to be ingonored. Thankfully it was this type of underestimating that is needed for a roster like mine to be successful.
The fact of the matter is that the Hurricanes were that favoured team 2 out of the 4 series. In the 6 years of this league, guys like Andersson and Leclaire have NEVER won anything. It really amazed me sometimes
If you want to start pointing some fingers at what might just be the reason for the sim lately then why not pick something a little better like that change over that has been happening in the NHL and the CPHL... no longer are these great vets running the show and most of the stocked teams in the playoffs are stocked because they contain some of the best talent in the league.... who just happens to have very little experience. Back in the day when Cheese ruled with a heavy hand his 4th line had more experience then most teams have all together.
If you think that the Hurricanes won because two garbage goalies then you're kidding yourself

Calm down ladies.......
This thread is about a Thrasher-Predator deal, not about the SIM/certain players being overrated/underrated in the sim. Save that for tea time.

It wasn't meant as a shot at the Canes or the Sim but the fact that OV ratings aren't necessarily a recipe for goaltending success.
The Canes were just the latest example of a team that was successful.
Not meant to be taken as whinning but just a observation of the sim. I have heard many people comment about the lack of success that some of the better goalies like Luongo have had, while Lalime (I think) was a stud for awhile.

A lot of the sentiments expressed here (about the trade) are the same that crossed my mind. Thing is that I fall in the camp that thinks a player like St. Louis doesn't move without some major return going to the other team.
I really like Pominville...but does he ever get to 82OV? I also really like Ellis and doubt this to be the case, but does he look as good over an entire season? I can't say that I disagree with the thoughts on Aubin at all, but there is a large cap savings for me here as well.
From my perspective I added a top line guy, gave up some talent to do that (which was a lower rated top line guy and a back-up goalie no matter how you cut it by the way). I managed to do this without costing me a fortune dollar-wise as well and actually could stand to save money when its all said and done...I'm pretty happy with the deal from that perspective.

I like the trade for Atlanta but then again that may also be why Im consistently a mediocre GM...younger cheaper guys are appealing but St Louis is a superstar now and it never hurts to get a guy like that

I shouldn't really lump Lepisto in as being junk either. He probably is one of the Preds better D prospects now and pretty much would be a good prospect for any CPHL team. I have a pretty bad record for making deals in this league myself too so anything I say can usually be discounted.

He didn't say the Canes won because of their goalies, not at all. He said they won despite their goalies. There's a big difference. He was pointing out that the overall talent of your goaltending didn't seem to matter much and you were successful because of other reasons- some of which you pointed out. You guys are basically saying the same thing.
But I have to say I disagree with Moon on this one. This was a crazy playoffs all around and that includes a team doing so well with goalies rated 75 and whatever Anderson was. That's not a shot at the Canes because they did a great job, but the previous year I think I counted there were only like 4 out of 16 playoff teams that had a starter rated below 79. And out of 16 non-playoff teams only 3-4 had a starter rated 79 or higher. So having at least one good goalie does seem to coincide with having a decent team. Obviously a lot of other things matter as well.
