If you post the make/model of the laptop, someone can google for specific instructions. As suggested, it might be a BIOS password.
If that's the case, you can reset by taking out the batttery on the motherboard. I'm not sure how easy that is to do on a laptop. Or sometimes there is a jumper than you can set to clear the CMOS (saved BIOS info). But before you do that, it would be a good idea to get some specific information about the machine, so that you can reset the BIOS setup as it should be.
