Just curious what you didn't like about STP... I was right up front, the sound was great, and I was surprised that Weiland and the Deleo's were so in sync. Even though the haven't been a band for a decade, it sounded like 1995.

I guess if you didn't like them back in the 90's, you probably wouldn't like them too much now either.

I agree with the Flaming Lips set comments, far beyond my expectations of them as well.

I didn't care for the Flaming Lips at all. Teletubbies, balloons, songs were lame and I was bored. People seemed to like them so that's fine.


STP sounded incredible, Dean DeLeo has one of the best guitar tones I have heard live and Robert is one of the best musicians I have seen, period. They were only 16 mins late, thank God Scott didn't do his Axl impersonation. I was suprised at how well the PA sounded, very crisp, clean bottom end and Dean's guitar crunch cut right through. Scotts vocals were alright, I've seen some live footage where he was off key and just out of it, he did fine last night.

I never had the chance to see them before, they were booked to come through Alberta with Megadeth in '91 but didn't make it. Anyways, their set exceeded my expectations, what a band. I cant imagine how much of a letdown the Hip will be as a headliner tonight after STP's set on Saturday.

Yeah, today looks like a pretty mellow day compared to yesterday. I love Matt Good, but I don't know if he's that great for a festical with his new arrogant attitude towards how people act at his concerts. I love his new music, but that rant he went on about how he basically hates it when his fans do anything besides just sit there and enjoy the music kind of turned me off of wanting to see him at an outdoor, standing only event. HE hates it when people mosh (I gues that's understandable considering his newer stuff), hates it when people cheer too much, he doesn't even like it when people move around, and even complained that some fans weren't "feeling" certain songs the right way because they were apparantly bobbing there heads to a song that didn't call for that. So yeah, he definitly isn't cut out for the old festivals anymore imo.

I saw the Lips opening for (and then acting as the back-up band for as well) Beck a few years ago in Vancouver. They had the same shtick - people lined up dressed in woodland creature costumes, big screen in the back playing Teletubby footage, lots of theatrics. Overshadowed the fact that the music wasn't THAT great. Showmanship is important but ultimately I am there to hear the band do justice to their material. Wayne Coyne was more concerned with spinning a lamp around over top of his head than finishing the lyrics to some of his songs. I enjoyed it but I have never been compelled to rave about the show - although I acknowledge they are unique in their style. Whatever I guess.

STP would have been the only reason I would have gone yesterday but I couldn't justify $75 for a segment of a festival show that might have gone awry. Too many variables to take the risk... but it sounds like it would have been worth it. Oh well.

Core and purple were my fave's and I thought they started dropping off after tiny music..something something.. but a combination of five hours in the heat and beer sort of had me down and out. I imagine if it was a dome type show i would have enjoyed it more but when weiland came out and had no real energy (i only saw the first three songs) it was over for us.

Though I love the song, I did think that 'Big Empty' was a strange one to open up with. Definitely not an energy song. I thought they would open with 'Vasoline' or 'Sex Type Thing'.

Core and Plush are my favorite too, I would have to say that 80% or more of their set last night were from those two albums. I think the only non-core/plush tunes were: sour girl; big bang baby; lady picture show; Down.

Anyway, IMO, you should have stuck around

Anyone catch Global News this morning where they showed some old Bridgeland resident complaining about the loud music from Virgin fest that was annoying him until the ungodly hour of 10:40 PM on a Saturday night?

It's people like that who keep Calgary from getting quality outdoor concerts more often. Tyranny of the minority.

Hmmm... saw Matt Good here in Halifax about 3 weeks ago. He was very engaged with the crowd, talking, joking, encouraging crowd movement and participation during the faster songs. The new material was EXCELLENT live and this coming from a guy who isn't a big fan of his newer albums. It seems like he really enjoys playing with his new band and it comes across in his attitude. Give him a chance, it really appears that he has conquered his demons. His behvaiour in the past was largely a product of his mental problems, IMO.

Saw them in Montreal at le Spectrum. I'm not the biggest fan but it was a fun show in a classic venue. Don't think it would translate as good in an outdoor atmosphere.

SO glad to hear this. I saw them in Aug 2000 with RHCP. Scott stole the show that night... by the time the Peppers took the stage it didn't even matter if they were good or not, STP gave everyone their money's worth. Was going to head up to Quebec to see them again in a couple weeks but was skeptical that the band would still have it. Now I guess I better grab some tickets.

Actually you are incorrect. I have had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions and can happily report he is one of the nicer musicians I have ever met. He often times will personally respond to fan emails and meets with fans outside his tour bus after every show (despite the fact he has an immunodeficiency disease and he gets brutally sick every tour).

He as also done a great deal of work for the mental illness community and is often considered a spokesman for those suffering from depression and manic depression.

He is very intolerant of stupid behaviour (from fans and the media) and is oftentimes unable to just ignore it. Just because he may speak his mind more often than most does not make him an a**hole.

He really shouldn't be playing festivals for this reason imo. Drunken debauchery is pretty much standard around most festivals like Virgin Fest, so I was surprised to see this gig booked.

Always a few cranks that try to take away some of the fun. The noise was within the 7 am to 11 pm noise bylaw hours so the guy has nothing but complain to himself. Also, if you live near downtown of a major city it's part of the gig IMO.

I was disappointed that Global News barely covered the concert and its economics benefits, exposure for Calgary etc. but devoted an entire piece on this old crank complaining about a moot point. Typical Gloabl News.

Actually across the river the noise was at it's highest when it hit 75dbs, which is 10dbs over the bylaw limit. However, they shuold just get over it, this is why Calgary is known as a debbie downer, no fun zone.

To be fair, Global News covered "old cranky man" because they knew it would get a bigger reaction, and that's their job. The people who went to Virgin would read the review, where as, if they do an article on "old cranky man" and the concerned citizens he represents, well then everyone's reading it with interest. It's now a common interest story. People at the festival will read it and react strongly (like we are now), people who were against the festival will read it with support, and thousands of people all over the city will read it because it's controversy.
