Massive skateboarder rally downtown - June 21

My wife and I were shopping downtown this afternoon at TD square. Just before 1:00pm, a massive wave of skateboarders, perhaps 200 to 300 strong, passed through the 2nd level, stopping for a couple of minutes for some individuals to jump down a couple flights of stairs by the Coles bookstore.

Is this something that happens often?

What are they rallying for? Are they mad that they aren't allowed to loiter and destroy as much property these days?

There were significant numbers of "sk8tbois" representing either high and low levels of personal hygiene. However, the number of cute female boarders over 18 with good hygiene was hovering at 0.1%, give or take one-tenth of a percentage point.

Anyways, how do skaters hold a rally? Do they have a newsletter that no one else is aware of? What are they rallying for/against? Are they even old enough to vote?

A bunch of them took over the pathway at Eau Claire too.

I was running through, expecting having to fight through throngs of people, that's normal for a nice Saturday in June. But when I encountered this group, they didn't even acknowledge my existence. They wouldn't make any space, were doing their "tricks" (when I was a kid, we did cooler tricks than flipping our boards over), just generally making life difficult for everyone. I was literally jumping over skateboards like they were hurdles as these little a-holes were flipping them down in front of me.

Needless to say, I was thoroughly annoyed. I wondered why they couldn't be doing this a few blocks away at the park BUILT FOR THEM: Milennium Park?
