I don't get the reactions in this thread....

He served the penalty for his crimes (as determined by the criminal justice system) and has reentered society. He is not a criminal any longer. Theoretically he has received treatment for his disorders and can now lead a moderately average life.

And now he's become incredibly lucky.

If anyone sues him, they deserve to be counter sued for being dorks.

Of course, if he's charged again with a crime, well... now he's a rich target. I'd rather a sex offender get lucky then someone with a past in violent crime. (not to down play his offense)

I'm certainly not defending this loser's actions, but lets be honest. These "rapist wins millions" stories are designed to cause reactions. The law says he's done his time, so why is this news?
I agree 100%

Unless we decide that a criminal record means you are no longer entitled to play the lottery, or a myriad of other things, then he is allowed to win.

Am I glad an offender won? No, but if I'm willing to take these losers money then I need to grant them the chance that they may win.

People do a crime, get caught, and pay the penalty. If we force them to continue to pay for the rest of their lives, then what reason will they have to abide by laws if they are to be perpetually guilty?

Sexual offenders are perpetually guilty, they are registered sex offenders.

This story didn't shock me as much as it just made me laugh.

Shouldn't a pedophile be considered a "someone with a past in violent crime"?

Either way, what a goofy story. USA Today would cover this big lottery win regardless of his past. The 'indignation' about this loser winning the money strikes me as kind of funny though.

It's like they are saying "the bad guys always win the lottery, life just ain't fair".

I don't really think some compensation to a victim of a violent crime like rape is that outrageous. Thankfully I haven't suffered such an attack, but if I did, I'm pretty sure my life would never be the same. Civil ligitigation is there for a reason. If this guy broke in your house and stole your possessions, wouldn't you want restitution? I'm not saying the victim should get all of his lottery winnings, but she did go through something tramatic and her parents probably have spent money on counseling. This girl would be in her early 20's now, just a little money could provide a change of scenery, ensure a college education. If the guy totalled her car, she'd get restitution, violating her physically is much more tramatic.
