Is it just me, or is this over the top for the average consumer? While the iPhone data charges will be less, when you're paying $75/month on a cell phone bill every month for 3 years at a minimum, how can you justify that to yourself? I'm really interested in getting my first BB and I want to get either the Bold or Thunder when they arrive, but at these prices, I couldn't justify getting it for those monthly prices. I just wish some of these companies could look at it like this and truthfully say they're not giving it to the consumer in the hind.

Actually... when I call Rogers tomorrow to add on this $30 data BB plan, I'll have...
$15
250 Daytime Minutes
Unlimited Incoming Calls
Unlimited Evening and Weekends starting at 6:00PM
$30
300MB BlackBerry Data
$12
Voicemail, Text Msg, Name/Number Display, etc
Total: $57

Is the $15 a retention deal? Also, does the 300MB allow browsing htmal sites like CP? Don't know. Secondly, you forgot to add SAF and taxes. But you get my point right? All in all you're paying $80 or so with taxes and all.

I believe that the thunder is both cdma and gsm (according to boygeniusreport.com). If that is true, and it is (and most likely will) be carried by telus, then you can get unlimited data and a good voice for 60 a month from telus.

SAF = $6.95
So...
$57.00 (Voice/Data/Addons) + $7.00 (SAF) = $64.00
$64.00 x 1.05 (GST) = $67.20
So my total (including all fees and taxes) will be $67.20.
(yes, the $15 voice plan is a retention plan)
For the record, smart phones with data were never meant to be cheap. If you want cheap, get a RAZR. Six months ago, I was paying $25.00 for 1MB of BB data, so $30.00 for 300MB is pretty nice.

I was going to go crazy all over this until I reread what you said and then I did and I agree. The iPhone was the first to take it to the next level, I just wish the other makers would rise to the challenge but so far it's been very slow.

Currently not that much, but once they launch the app downloader it'll explode, I know tons of people and companies doing apps or porting apps, heck even my company seriously considered it and would be doing it if it weren't for other things.

Don't see why not, it looks like these plans are the plans for all other devices other than a 3G iPhone purchased from Rogers, and an unlocked iPhone would qualify as any other device.
I can see them not applying the $30 unlimited plan to first gen iPhones, but I can't see them denying use of the generic data plans for one specific model of phone but allowing all devices.. I guess they COULD to try and force people to upgrade, but it seems unlikely.

From the PDF file linked:

Provides better value than the $30 unlimited (browsing and e-mail plans from competitors) as you can use it for all of your data needs including Facebook, GPS, e-mail, browsing, apps and almost anything else
|
Sounds like data, regardless of what's using it, the app could be Opera or whatever.

And how long have people been developing them for? There are easily over 100 for the iPhone without the dev-kit. Once the iTunes store opens up applications there will be tonnes.
Some highlights of my applications:
Solitaire
Dominoes
Mobile Scrobbler
Sketches (etch-a-sketch)
iSplit (split a bill, add tax and tip)
Phonezap (I use it to create custom ringtones)
Most of the others I tinker with.
For those worried about the data usage. I just got my last bill and I used 85MB. I don't tend to use it much during work days since I'm either at work or at home and have computers there. Mostly use it for e-mail and sms.

Haha, yep. Safari on the iPhone (and Touch) is a thing of beauty. Like I said in a different thread here (or maybe earlier in this one), the iPhone/iTouch are the first portable devices to bring the mobile internet out of the gimmick era.

I installed Putty (Putteh!) on my Touch a few months back. Easily one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen.
It will be the first thing I install on my iPhone.

I knew someone would bring this up. I said thats one thing i dont like about the iphone, and as of right now, is my statement not true? Anyways I am quite curious as to how open the system is for developers. Will developers be able to write programs that alter the core programs? I ask this because I get the notion that apple likes alot of control over its product.

30 for unlimited still seems excessive (not including voice). i use an HTC touch with Bell and pay 42/month + gst and it includes 200 minutes in the day, unlimited evenings and weekends, all calling features, and unlimited internet.
The browsing on internet explorer on windows mobile 6.1 is pretty decent as well. the speeds are good too. with some software mods you can watch youtube and other streaming video just fine.
It's nice being able to customize the touch to enable gps as it's a pretty easy phone to unlock.
i'd have to say that the iphone is a superior phone, but the cost is not worth it when i compare it side by side. If rogers could give me the same plan as Bell, i would switch in a heartbeat though.

Do you mean will it allow developers to mess up your phone so bad that it crashes while taking a phone call like windows mobile? No, they won't. This is only version 2.0 of the OS so it's possible that things like multitasking may come if they can figure out a way of doing it without compromising the customer experience.
xTools and the iPhone SDK are powerful tools and the iPhone is truly OS X so you aren't really limited to what you can create because all of Apple's core technologies exist on the phone as they do more or less on the desktop. I can't imagine any app I would want that alters the system or stock apps.

I called Fido this morning and checked with the CSR, and sure enough the $30 / 300MB plan was there, so I had him replace my $25/5MB plan work pops for with it.

That sounds like one of those bargain basement retention deals. They're hard to get as a new signup.

Actually I was just being curious, and not bashing the iphone or anything. I simply do not know alot about the OS for the iphone. I was talking about things like will developers be able to create programs using the accelerometer, timed profiles and things like that. The iphone is definitely not the phone for me but i was just curious. No need for anyone to get defensive.

Even before the SDK came out there were programs that did that.. so in a word.. YES.
