Walking up Sulphur Mountain
Quick question for anyone that's done this before with a dog - if you walk up Sulphur mountain, I know you can ride the gondola down (it was free when I did it a few years ago), but if you went with your dog, can the dog ride the gondola too?

I did this a few years ago. They now charge you for the trip down even if you did not go up. Not sure about the dog though...

It's only about a 40 minute - 1 hour hike back down. Why didn't you just do that instead

I can't remember how long it took me to walk up, but I ran down in under 30 mins.

IIRC walking at a brisk pace you can make it around an hour or so. If you decide to feed the obese squirrels then tack on an additional 5 to 10 minutes.

I would say it takes closer to 2 hours. Maybe 2.5 - maybe I'm just slow. I was at the hot springs on the weekend, and read the sign at the start of the Sulpher Mountain trail - and true enough they do want you to pay to go down. If you ask me, that really blows. $20 to just get into Banff, now this. I wonder when they will start charging to park in any of the parking lots in Banff and greater Banff (ie: Johnston's Canyon). It's just getting rediculous.

We had some kids with us who didn't want to turn around and hike back down. It seemed like the best option at the time. We can laugh about it now.

There won't be paid parking at all in the foreseeable future. The issue we have is finding the space for more free parking. And yes, paying to go down the gondola sucks.

If you didn't go up why did you need a ride down?

It's $26 return.
I think of it like downloading movies and then being blocked from them. You may have gotten away with it previously, but it is a product/service and you can choose not to buy it if you don't like it Using the gondola on the way down the mtn does incur expenses for the company.
But what can I say. I work for the company that owns the gondola

I can totally understand. The whole gondola system was getting run down. They needed to put some money into that thing. The last time I rode it, it was in much better shape than the time before. Hopefully they'll get enough money to renovate the cafeteria.
