Sat, June 21 - City subsidized compost bins
I got a flyer in the mail today. Apparently the City of Calgary is selling a compost bin that's normally $100 in value at $25 on Saturday at various parking lots on Saturday, June 21. Details can be found at http://www.calgary.ca/waste.
I certainly plan to pick up one of these puppies that morning! Oh and I suppose I should run out and grab my three bags of grass clippings out of the alley!

I must admit, I'm giddy. My parents are so old fashioned that they've pretty much refused to get a composter, but after years, they have relented. And I am so getting myself a composter this Saturday.

I believe that you can get these for this price year round at the eco-store downtown, for the same price. In any event these are a good deal and worth while if you're planning on doing some composting!
I have two...but am thinking of adding a third this weekend!

They do sell them year round. And they do not care who buys them either. I live outside of the city and bought 2. Sadly, they are not bear proof. Last fall, the local bear on our property, made a little visit during the night. He lifted the composter out of the ground, not broken or damaged, just pulled it out, and all the stuff I composted all summer got eaten in one night.
This spring, he came out of hibernation and of course was crazy hungry. Everything I was composting all winter got eaten in one night again  ((

I bought one back in 2001. Great unit, and I've been a composting fool ever since. It's amazing how quickly lawn clippings and vegetable scraps break down.

Really? I was wondering about that. How long does it take? I heard that within a year it was good to go, but that was from a not so reliable source.

Well I am a bit of a composting animal...I basically put everything in there that is biodegradeable. One thing that you should buy if you're just starting out is the compostable bags from the eco-store. I think that there are 5 bucks for 20...you can collect all of your compostables in there and then just throw the whole bag in the bin...very simple!

Yeah, but I guess it's all relative. I don't have a huge lawn, so I don't generate lots of clippings. If I'm not mistaken, a manual comes with the composter, and I tried to follow it as closely as possible. Layering greens (lawn clippings, fruit rinds) and browns (fall leaves), turning, watering etc.

I don't think you can compost protein. It gets stinky. And then it'd be like putting out a signal you have dead bodies in your backyard.

Nope, can't compost protein or fat. Well, at least not with this form of composting. There's bokashi, which can compost anything.

Meh so long as the compost gets put to use. And eventually it will return to the soil in the form of bear doo. It's the natural cycle of things. Beautiful really...
(Note: The primary point of this post is for me to use the word "doo")

I have a horrible compost phobia..so composting is out for me! When I was about 9 my brother threw me in the compost pile, on Vancouver Island, where compost piles are basically snake nests. Can't even finish the story!!
