Agreed. Growing up in Winnipeg the laws were different; I believe the pedestrian has the right of way after signalling to the driver that he wants to cross, and once he knows that the driver has seen him. When was the last time you saw somebody in Calgary stick out their arm to indicate that they want to cross.

This probably wasn't the problem in this latest accident; as one car had already stopped for them.

This case has gone to trial this week.

This testimony doesn't make any sense... how can a car just suddenly appear from the sky!? You think the car changed lanes quickly? If the car changed lanes quickly it can't be going that fast.

I don't know why this isn't common place, but I'd like to see rumble strips cut into the road before a crosswalk that's not at an intersection. The same rumble strips on a highway when approaching a stop sign. I think it would be very effective in letting a distracted driver know that he's approaching something important.

I'm a city council member in a city that is not Calgary. The best way to bring this issue up is to determine which of your aldermen has the best rep for getting things done, then write him/her a letter then followup with a call to his/her office at city hall. Ask for a meeting to discuss this, and perhaps a site visit with you.
