Default The 10 most Manly Dogs

Hey guys, I'm writing my next article on the "10 most Manly Dogs", and I was looking for your opinions on what breeds you would recommend. I am looking for dogs that are a good mix of intelligence, presence, and appearance. So far, I have come up with the following list

English Mastiff
Pitbull
Cane Corso
Husky (Alaskan or Siberian)
Doberman Pincher
Rottweiler
German Shepherd
Golden Retreiver
Bloodhound
Boston Terrier

user recommendations:

American Bulldog
Jack Russell
Rhodesian Ridgeback

Any suggestions of what I should add / remove?

Thanks for your help in advance!

This dog should be on that list:

Add Boxer.

Considering how small Boston's are I'm not sure I'd include them on this list.

A small manly dog imo would be a Jack Russel.

I need one small manly dog just for a bit of variety. Would a Jack Russell fit that bill more than a Boston Terrier?

The manliest dog on the planet is the Rhodesian Ridgeback. A dog bread to harass and chase Lions.

They're also an awesome family pet.

Honestly, its the only dog I'll own. One of the smartest animals I've ever seen, they are natural jail breakers, extremely loyal and incredibly fast.

I vote Husky!! I love them! Gorgeous animals, smart, they don't bark as much as other breeds, but they find other ways to communicate, like howling. They are definitely full of personality and attitude. (Though I am not sure my vote counts for the purposes of this thread, given that I am a chick... )

An American bulldog is as manly as you can get IMO.

Here is a pic of my buddy with his dog:

My last dog was a Rhodesian Ridgeback / Labrador Retreiver cross, which I got from the SPCA. Awesome dog! Mine didn't have the stripe down the back though.

Most people have no idea what a Rhodesian Ridgeback is.

My first dog was a Ridgeback/Golden Retriever mix. Taking him for a walk was a dangerous trip because he was incredibly strong and Ridgebacks have amazing stamina.

He was also the most loyal dog I've ever met. Amazingly smart. Figured out how to pop gates, honk the car horn, he could climb trees if the branches were low enough

Weird though, his favorite food was pancakes.

The Irish Wolfhound is one that I'd add to the list. Their only drawback is you need a 1/4 section of land for them.

I think you need to remove pitbulls. Yes their tough dogs, but they're also unstable, and bred to the point of insanity. They're not good dogs to have in your community.

That's what I was thinking too, since some communities / cities ban people from owning them. Winnipeg comes to mind.

I should clarify - I'm looking for the "10 Most Manly Dogs to Own".

Agreed. Dogs that snap at random and are often bred for violent traits don't get my respect. That's not a sign of a real man, that's the sign of a tempermental child.

I'd like to second the Boxer though, those are some amazingly loyal dogs.

You people are uneducated about pitbulls, it has more to do with irresponsible owners and bad breeders than the dog. If you get a pitbull from a responsible breeder and socialize/train properly they are a great dog, just like any other dog. It's too bad they are the de facto trailer trash/ghetto superstar dog who would be bad owners no matter the breed.

Also, a lot of dog bites are reported as "pit bull looking dogs" because the public has placed this label on them and it actually wasn't a pit at all.
