I've worked in retail now for six years, five of those at Superstore and just recently started working at Best Buy just over a month ago. Anyways, I always try and give the best service I can to each and every customer, even if you're acting like an towards me about something that I have no control over, which happens to me once in a blue moon really. I don't understand why people that work in retail can't provide good customer service, it's not that hard really. Well, okay it might be harder if the customer is a complete ....LOL.
So to the thread starter, I love how you put poor service by everyone. I'm not everyone....LOL.

Wow, that doesn't make you funny or clever at all, it makes you a idiot. You know that a lot of retail staff especially in gas stations put the change on the counter because they're being monitored right. Some other retail people don't put your change in your hand because they don't want to touch your hand.
If I was a customer behind you, I'd probably feed you your nickels one at a time. If I was working there, the next time you came in, I'd point you out to the manager, tell him that you paid me in nickels and walked out before I counted and you shorted me by three bucks.
I don't know what you do for a living, but I really hope that you make a mistake with a customer and instead of forgiveness he puts you through a personal form of hell that would make Dante weep.

Well, i'm tired of trying to pickup my coinage off the counter without some or all of it falling on the floor as i push it into my hand. I usualy hold out my hand for the change and if the clerk is going to a jerk and slam it on the counter time after time - as this gal did on numerous occassions - you get what you deserve. I also spent a number of years in retail and never once slammed some customers change on the counter.

I hate it when people can't put the money in your hand when you have your hand extended. Especially if they are giving you multiple coins back one at a time and it goes like this. You have your hand out waiting for the change, the clerk puts some coins on the counter bypassing your hand. You pick the coins off the counter and proceed to put your hand out for the remaining coins that have yet been dispensed and the clerk proceeds to put the coins on the counter.
Really annoying, not something that I would get pissed off about and do what Dion did, which I think there is more to his story than just a one time incident but still annoying.
Sure I guess some people may have a phobia about touching other people, kind of like buddy off of deal or no deal but I think more often than not it is just plain rudeness. And if they are worried about not touching someones had because of germs, well let me tell you, money is one of the dirties things around, forget about someones hands.

Because you have never complained before? There is a point when someone who complains no stop just becomes annoying, but you know what.......if something was wrong and no one compalined about it, how is the situation going to be resolved?

Most gas staions i've encountered put my bills and change into my hand.
Don't want to touch my hand? Maybe i don't want to run my hands on their grimey counter and pick coins off thier dirty floors
Here's a soultion....Put the coins on top of the bills you're handing me. If it's just coins drop it into my hand. That's what i did and nobody ever complained.

I've spent my entire career in retail and customer service. Sure i made mistakes from time to time, but what i never did is repeat them over and over to be a jerk to my customers.

I was directly referring to the people that will look right at you and still slap the coins on the counter as though they are gaining by me having to pick the shiz up.
Inevitably, chinese clerks will put the money on the counter. Must be a cultural thing. In Italy, you never touch hands during a cash transaction. There are money plates at every till.
That's fine for Italy and little chinese confectionaries. But if I'm in a store dealing with someone (apparently) born and raised here, it blows my mind that they can look right at you or simply stare out the window and smack coins down on their counter instead of taking a 1/4 second to drop it into my extended hand.
My evil side remembers their faces but my indifferent side forgets their useless asses the minute the door on my truck closes.
I guess I just don't comprehend the mentality of not taking pride in your work. Whether you're a tradesman or a professional or climbing the totem pole and pumping gas.

I'm more interested to know how you only needed $20 in gas. Usually costs me that much to drive to the gas station and back.
Another fast food thing that happens to me a lot is when I walk in somewhere and there's no line or anything. Walk up to the counter and look up to the menu to pick what I want to eat and the person behind the counter says "Can I help you?", then when I say just a second or something they walk away from the till into the back or give an annoyed huff. It's understandably annoying when there is a big line and a person walks up after waiting in it for ten minutes and still doesn't know what they want, but I just walked in. Usually it upsets me so much that after I've finished eating I pull a Dion and poop on the floor in the bathroom.

Why not use DEBIT or CREDIT and solve the problem of change being put on the counter?
Better yet, pay at the pump and you dont have to have interaction with the so-called lowly clerk.

Oh man, when I was living in France I actually couldn't believe how horrible customer service was.
At first I thought maybe at first they assumed I was a tourist, but I was living there and speak fluent French. However over time I realized that no matter who you are there, you're going to get crap service. No one is going to be particularly friendly or patient when they are serving anyone.
No one there is ever in a rush to help you, you can stand at the front of the line for 20 minutes while the person behind the window talks on the phone, types on the computer, walks around and shuffles papers even acknowledges you. You can wait half an hour before someone comes to take your order in a cafe or restaurant, and at least that amount of time before you actually get whatever you ordered (including drinks...).
I remember trying to get internet set up in my apartment, and I was told that it would be at least a month before someone could come. I decided to steal wireless instead. A friend of mine actually did arrange for someone to come set hers up, and no one ever came.
Although I suppose that's just the French way of doing things... I probably just found their actions abraisive and unfriendly just because I'm used to much friendlier (although not always more efficient or better) customer service here.

Fools... even if you talk to them they're HR and know nothing other than "apply on our website". My career fair policy usually is to seek out the grey-haired guys.
On topic though, service in Calgary sucks. When I went to Florida last February I rarely tipped less than 20% because I was so used to Calgary's standards of service. That's when I came to realize how much better it actually is elsewhere.
Surprised Bell's being named here. They've taken pretty good care of me with my cellphone. Of course, my initial experience with their franchises was horrible. But go to Bell Corporate, and can they hook you up with some pretty good deals.

Then we have threads like this where people are wondering where the customer service is. Frankly i haven't seen much of it in Calgary these days.

Poor customer service is a breakdown in communication. The clerk doesn't understand how important it is for you to have your change handed to you. You're holding out your hand for change and she's not interested in watching you for body language signals.
A much more effective way to have her hand you your change, is to simply speak up. "I know that my hands are dirty after a long day at work, but if you could even just drop the change into my palm, I wouldn't have to get your hands or the counters here dirty by sliding my palms over them to scoop up my change from the glass. I sure would appreciate it."
There seems to be a lost art here in Canada of just telling people straight up what you need to make your experience a good one.

It seems people get lazy in the way they communicate in certain situations. Treat that clerk like it is one of your friends. The people behind the til are some of the nicest people around in most cases and they see enough during the day to gain a lot of insight into how people behave. These people have a lot of heart and character to work in these extremely low paying jobs so don't ever think that you are better then them. For the most part face to face customer service in Calgary is good in my opinion. That nickel stunt is something that I would step in on if someone pulled this in front of me. Dion, even you have to admit now, that you over did that one? Like someone else said, there must be more to it?

haha Im sorry.. but if I was standing behind the guy/gal that says this, I'd laugh my ass off. I know what you mean about that last part. I was down in the states a couple weeks ago and noticed that Americans are really willing to just walk up and chat with any stranger like they've known them years. It's both an odd yet endearing quality.
